The wash out period when switching over from certain drugs like Bupropion to Phenelzine is 14 days.

If the drug was only taken for 5 days at 150mg (half life of Bupropion is 20 hours) would it be safe to say that a person would not have to wait the whole 14 days?

Well, it is hard to give a wide-ranging, safe answer to the question. MAOIs definitely have a lot of individual variations, and your relative blood pressures and reactions to drugs might be something to watch. And what dose of the MAOI you start at.

On the other hand, some go by 5x the half life rounded up to the week to ten days, roughly. And with monitoring, inpatients go faster. Some are even on parnate and wellbutrin, and even desipramine.

(I know someone on 50 of parnate and 225 of wellbutrin. I'm on 80 of Parnate, and a doc considered some bupropion or even a small dose of ritalin for me. I have orthostatic hypotension on the drug though, and low blood pressure.) And well, I think that level of depression usually signals a unique brain chemistry

Yeah, it probably would be okay vs. something like clomiprimine, but getting in the habit of rushing with maois doesn't always pay off well...and if you have some bipolar traits, quick switches aren't the best.

But I'm overly cautious because of some oddball reactions. Well, and somewhat depressed...

But instead of this long post...sure.

you just want to make sure that the buproprion is completely out of your system. 14 days is probably longer than is necessary.

I think the bigger concern is going the other way, from MAOI to x-RI.

rule of thumb: wait 5-7 half lives of the ndri to ensure washout if you are paranoid. (5-7 days)

I think the bigger concern is going the other way, from MAOI to x-RI.

i thought so too. especially if you are using short-acting "recreational" ndris.

Thanks for the replies. 4 days was enough from Bupropion to Phenelzine.

While this -is- risky, I've come to the conclusion that MAOIs are not that dangerous as they are said to be. It's just the dosage that makes them toxic. Tranylcypromine, a licensed antidepressant, is even a MAOI and dopamine releaser in a single molecule. The real danger is when strong serotonergic compounds are involved. Otherwise, just start low enough and watch the reactions ...

But well, I am seriously interested in trying an irreversible MAOI for myself, as nearly everything other failed (or is not continuously available / affordable). I'd be glad to hear from you how the Phenelzine feels compared to other antidepressants (:

Yes, alot of the food interactions are over exaggerated IME.

It's going very well at the moment compared to other antidepressants apart from some side effects.

MAOIs are very useful antidepressants indeed. There's a study somewhere that showed that 5-10mg of selegiline and 100-500mg of phenylalanine daily was 80-90% effective in causing remission of depression, which is significantly better than most other antidepressants. There was also a study that showed that the MAO inhibiting B-carbolines like harmine could be useful antidepressants, but the reversibility means you'd have to redose often.
