Four people die from 'bad batch of heroin'
August 15, 2008 05:08pm

AT least four people have died on the Gold Coast after taking what police believe is a bad batch of heroin.

Acting assistant police commissioner Paul Taylor said another four people had been treated in hospital after taking the heroin, but survived.

The latest suspected victim was a 20-year-old man, found dead in a Palm Beach motel on Tuesday morning.

Three other drug-related deaths have been reported on the southern Gold Coast over the past few weeks.

"Sadly again in the last few days there have been a number of suspected heroin overdoses," Mr Taylor said.

"To our knowledge, there have been eight since August 10 and, sadly, four of those persons did not recover and died as a result."

Police were working closely with Queensland Health officers on the spate of heroin overdoses.

They also warned illicit drug users not to take heroin which they had bought or had been offered to them over the past few weeks.

It had not yet been determined what was in the drug, Mr Taylor said.

"It could be there is a harmful item in it that has reacted to them or it could be the quality of the heroin," he said.

"That is is yet to be determined."

Five people have been charged with drug and other offences.

The article says they are still testing it. A few years ago fentanyl laced smack was doing the rounds in the US and people were dying, not sure if fent would be a likely culprit in this case though, it's not that big over here. Really pure product maybe? Either way, it's terrible news and I hope everyone who reads this takes precautions.

It will be interesting to see what the results of the tests will be.

Personally it sounds as though it has been laced with fentanyl but it could be anything.... Dealers put what ever they want into their product just to make a bit of extra cash.

there has been a lot of talk around of the new lot of more pure heroin hitting the streets here in canberra, with even people on methadone using it due to its breakthough high on top of the methadone they are on

Hopefully the few H users in brissy on here are ok, this thread would be a good place to let us know your fine.

Any word back yet on whether they have tested it yet and what's in it???

I'm really interested to find out whether it's really really pure or whether it's cut with something...

I warned all the people I know that use smack that their is a dangerous batch going around and to use with caution.

Good idea warning users though.

Yes, although the effectiveness of future warnings, may in part, depend on what follows. If users are led to believe there's a nasty ingredient present when it's in reality a strong batch, then some might see this as more of a scare tactic than a genuine warning.

A guy I was speaking to on the weekend claimed this is just a strong batch, and he apparently knew one of the guys that died. He said strong, close to pure heroin was everywhere atm.

If the cops or whoever issued that warning were serious about saving users, then a comprehensive analytical report would follow within a few days of this announcement. It's now been five days, more than enough to run the GC/MS and prepare a report. If some strange nasty is present, granted, it might take longer to identify it, but at least that part of the warning could be verified, even if the compound/s aren't specifically identified. I would have also thought that the pathophysiology or toxicological profile of those who've died would reveal if some agent other than heroin was responsible.

^^ dude, hate to say but it's just about portraying a socially responsible image for them. When it boils down to it, they really couldn't give a crap if another few junkies (in their eyes simply criminals and misfits) overdose and die. They certainly wouldn't be going out of their way to prevent this from happening.

I dare say the authorities do care about saving lives, but perhaps in their eyes there are more urgent priorities they want to deal with; rightly or wrongly.

In my opinion, PD is right in that they should have been able to provide some more information by now.

bad batch its more like a strong batch thats very impure but contains some sort of synthetic fentanyl or its that afgan shit. its like very potent and very impure.
people dropping around australia most death don't get reported; its just another junkie dead cops don't care but alot of clinics have been informed but will its stop users no.
I think its good to be getting good dope, but if its that stuff that give u parkinsons from incorrect syth fuck that kill that cook, a welcome change from that homebake from morphine tablet morph 10-20% pure shit

Fentanyl is synthetic; if you mean a fentanyl analogue, I don't think they are very common at all in terms of being used for cutting, quite possibly due to potency issues (e.g. beta-hydroxy-4-methyl-fentanyl is around 4000-6000 times the potency of morphine).

I'm not sure I understand the last part of the quote; if the Afghan stuff is very potent, wouldn't it then be free from most impurities? Hence, less needs to be used which is why people are dying?

Came across this today.
String of overdoses in rural area

August 26, 2008 01:51pm
Article from: AAP

POLICE have launched a major investigation after a series of fatal drug overdoses in central Queensland in the past three months.

Three people have died in Rockhampton from suspected overdoses with the latest on Friday, when a 38-year-old man died after taking illicit drugs, police said. A 37-year-old Gladstone woman died on August 5. Five other people were transported to hospital in Yeppoon and Mackay on Sunday morning.

Regional Crime Coordinator Detective Inspector Jon Wacker said police were waiting for toxicology tests from Queensland Health to identify what substances were taken.

The overdoses came to police attention when a 21-year-old man died in Rockhampton on June 9. On August 2, a 31-year-old man died in Rockhampton.

"The link is geographical," Det Insp Wacker said. "We've never had a string of overdoses before. It's very concerning and the warning is out there, people who dabble in illicit drug-taking can die."

Det Insp Wacker launched Operation Gulf Cove today involving local detectives and state crime operations command to investigate the origin of the drugs.

Well that shows a lot cause i know from a autopsy report that fentanyl or its analogues are used and cut massively which is mad cause u looking at a drug 99% inpure like 99% cut less than 1% opiate. This is what i thought was causing deaths, cause u might be the unlucky or lucky cunt that gets say 2% opiate fentanyl.
Let me tell you a lot of dope users die without it making it to the statistical media and such.

but we also been knowing that Afghan shit was coming for a while instead of this ms morphine homebake shit: no offense to the cooks but i believe most our dope is cooked from morphine tabs or cut to shit imports but something new hits the street.
I tried some gear sold as "china white" not long ago and let me say it was very fuckin strong! but seemed very impure...hmmmmm.

I am suprized that Tazzie doesn't have alot of H instead its all methadone i mean all our codeine and morphine pharms come from that place, don't they?
but still....dope scene i think it a very up and down purity. You also got to wonder about stuff that comes in via asia then it get cut heaps it seems.

yeah my posts understanding if only i could see the screen. so i'll edit it in time.

There is warnings going around to doctors and clinics about this before i even seen this post.

^ I wasn't doubting that fentanyl is used to cut dope; it's well known and it's killed many people in the US and it's part of the reason that in OD we urge people to be careful when they get a new batch.

You said 'synthetic fentanyl'; fentanyl is always synthetic, so I figured you meant one of it's analogues maybe and their use in cutting dope is very rare, I can assure you. I have heard of it happening, but not in a long time and the chemist responsible is in jail now.

I don't really understand the rest of your post, so yeah I just wanted to clear that up.

Want to know what it is, the quality in Qld has been Shit since 9/11 and has only slowly been getting better because people are using the net to actually make diamorphine not just homebake crap but actual gear so off course all the L platers are dropping like flies...... know who your scoring from???

Diamporphine (diacetylmorphine) is what is in homebake, just that there are usually a lot of impurities and potentially dangerous things in there as well.

I'm interested to know as well, why hasn't there been any further info released yet? It can't be taking them this long to figure it out...

ETA: Quinn, you're not a Bob Dylan fan by any chance?
