Interesting Point:
I was buying a drink the other day and picked up a diet coke. I noticed it contains Phenylalanine.
Is it true then that: because of the fact that Phenylalanine is a pre-pre-cursor to Dopamine.. you should not be drinking Diet Coke after taking MDMA?!?!
If my info is incorrect please let me know!

I think the effects would be minimal, but nicely spotted!! It may make a little difference.
However I firmly believe that Diet Coke should not be drunk under any circumstances with the sole exception of when those big phat ass people go to a fast food store and buy the fattiest, most fattening shyte... and then get a diet coke with it... cos thats funny!

tho probably more suited to health Q&A, i was unaware of there being a problem with taking phenylalanine with mdma... actually i thought it may even be the oppposite. phenylalanine is a precursor to the neurotransmitter dopamine... and ive been taking an average of 800mg a day for the last three weeks up to Monday, to deal with marijuana withdrawal, and general malaise. this week ive only taken it when i start to fell tense.
perhaps a word from baby doc, zorn or anyone else who might know, on the phenalaline/mdma combo(!) would be good.

From http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/mdma/mdma_faq3.shtml:
The exact mechanism of MDMA neurotoxicity in animals is not presently known [11], but it seems to require dopamine activity, oxidation, and access to the 5-HT transporter. Increasing dopamine activity via ingestion of methamphetamine, l-tyrosine, phenylalanine or l-dopa would tend to increase MDMA neurotoxicity. This is a concern since phenylalanine is in diet soft drinks and products sweeted with aspartame(tm) and is also in many "smart drinks" sold at raves and of course methamphetamine is a concern since MDMA is often cut with crystal. On the other hand ascorbate (vitamin C) and l-cystine which are anti-oxidants have been shown to prevent MDMA induced neurotoxicity in animals, as has the administration of a SSRI antidepressant (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, etc.). Studies indicate that taking either an anti-oxidant or a SSRI up to 5 hours after taking MDMA will prevent neurotoxicity in animals[12].
Else where on the site tho there is a user who says they have 2-3 grams of DLPA (DL-Phenylalanine) if he "feel's "bummed out" the day after".
And just to back this up I in my searches I came across http://www.primevibes.com/eprime.htm . A product specifically for MDMA pre/post-loading! It also contains DL-Phenylalanine used to combat depression both before and after.
It seem's as though the phenylalanine content in drink is a growing concern for a number of sites also they do not elaborate. This found on
thegooddrugsguide.com :
avoid drinking soft drinks with artifical sweeteners
Aspartame and other sweetners contain phenylalanine, a substance which increases the neurotoxicity of MDMA. Watch for sweeteners in 'alco-pops' and other crappy club drinks. Only drink water and fruit juice.
It seems even though phenylalanine can increae neurotoxicity while ON a roll, the usage of it after helps to combat the effects of depression. But thats another topic all together :)

Anyone have a feel for what amount of phenylalanine is contained in Diet Coke? Perhaps we should figure out the doses contained in common food substances before we get quoted on the front page of a local tabloid newspaper...

Top work ruski - I'm still laughing at that last quote. This is a good question. The only reason "contains phenylalanine" appears on soft drink cans is because some people have a disorder called PKU (phenylketonuria) where they lack the enzymes to break down phenylalanine (and you thought the Coke Co was just trying to protect you from neurotox! ;) )
The actual amount of phenyalalanine in a soft drink, see Aspartame and the Internet,
The yield of phenylalanine is about 100 mg for a can of diet soft drink, compared with 300 mg for an egg, 500 mg for a glass of milk, and 900 mg for a large hamburger (1). Thus, the amount of phenylalanine .... ingested from consumption of aspartame is trivial, compared with other dietary sources (This was the only source of actual amounts I could find, so I couldn't corroborate these amounts).
Also keep in mind that the dopamine oxidization theory is one theory of neurotox, and I know I can speak for my esteemed colleague zorn when I say there is evidence to suggest it may not be the correct one.
All in all, given the small amount of phenylalanine in a soft drink compared to a burger, and the uncertainty of the dopamine/neurotox theory, I wouldn't worry about it. BTW, if you want a laugh check out the Coca-Cola FAQ. I do think that coke and diet coke are pretty nasty in general though.

Regardless of whether dosing up with phenylalanine increases the toxicity of MDMA, wouldn't it take too long for the diet coke (which tastes like crap and should be reserved for the uber fat, bump one point to entropope)to be passed through the system, actively transported to the brain and then converted to dopamine where it whould be protected by its vesicles from interaction with MDMA. And also when you eat a pill (dirty fingered pluggers may disregard this) some of it gets converted to MDA in vivo, which would release more dopamine than diet coke i should imagine. So i guess i what i'm trying to say is that the effect of diet coke would be negliable compared to actually eating the pill anyway. Thoughts?

phenylalanine is present in quite a few items we eat. Many ravers favorite, Extra chewing gum, many diet drinks and products... anything that is sugar free check it for phenylalanine as its quite often there.
