I didn't mean to take credit for the idea. My only contribution was to go out into the community to ask for volunteers to request and give specifications and then wear the winning avatar.

As Klue said, the main idea for the create-an-avatar competition was his.

I chose him because he posts a lot, so our avatar will get high visibility, he has a high profile here on the site, and he seemed like he wanted it the most. Just look at how many times he posted in this thread! ;) His description of what he wanted was also good, with plenty of detail and a solid theme.



To the runners up:

Sorry that I didn't choose you, but I had reasons which I share above. Next round will be a poll, I just wanted to have a bit more control over candidate selection at this early stage of the competition. I will keep all your names in mind and put you into the running next round, unless of course you wish to withdraw, in which case either pm me or post in this thread. So you still have a chance! I hope you can still find your way to follow the competition, maybe vote on the winner, and possibly even *gasp* participate! 8o ;)

If you wouldn't mind, could you please give us a final draft of your specifications for what you are looking for in your new avatar as soon as it is convenient for you?

You don't need to know every single detail, and it might be fun if you left some of them up to the artist, but giving us a clear direction to go in will help you to get what you are looking for.

Oh, expect to see the actual competition thread soon. I'm a little too tired tonight and still need to get final specs from our winning contestant, but it's on its way shortly.

If anyone has any final comments/suggestions that you think I should hear before starting the contest and making up the rules, now is the time to post them!

I wish I had cool graphic skillz, I'd love to do this but I dont know how to make my idea move all kewl like and stuff :(
 
you could do one with pencil and paper and then just scan and resize it. it doesn't need to be high-tech. Or just make one with MSPaint or something. All entries are welcome. :)
 
If I did all the pictures and then had someone else put them together so they'll move, is that acceptable, or is that like stealing someone else's skills?
 
Actually, I can show you pretty easily how to animate things. I was going to include links to the software and a brief tutorial perhaps to anyone who wanted it. It is basically a little program where you put each frame of the animation in sequence, and choose how fast it plays and how many times it repeats and other simple options. Its pretty easy. You can also modify existing animated gifs.

The hardest part, I think, is gonna be making the files small enough to fit BL's file size requirements. It is kind of limiting, but its all part of the challenge I suppose. :)
