if you go to jail and you are an add to H do thay give you any meds for W.D? OR YOU JUST SUFFER?

Where are you from? It really depends. Here they give you methadone or bupe.

A lot of places in the U.S. they just make you suffer through it.

But, as loulou said, you could be anywhere in the world.

Where are you located?

It's all location. I w/d in Harris County Jail (Houston Texas) off 100mg methadone, they gave me clonodine patches and ativan. Wasn't that bad, there's something about w/ding in jail thats a bit easier because you KNOW you arent getting any dope.

I've heard stories about people who detoxed in a rich county's jail, and they got suboxone, valium and clonidine. It sounded like it was better than an actual detox I went to.

It's my understanding that the majority of jails make you w/d cold turkey unless it's threatening your life (i.e. you have hypertension, tachycardia, or another physical ailment that could be dangerously exacerbated by severe withdrawal symptoms.)

I know Rikers Island had a methadone program for years but i think they did away with it.

Wow, that actually will give you benzos and opiates in jail if you just say you're addicted?

So....if I was going to go to jail for say...30 days...and I simply say that I'm super addicted to heroin, they'll toss me a stash of 'maintenance' drugs to get stoned on until I get out of jail?

No wonder there's so much reckless crime.... :p

My guess would be they would test you for opiates before giving you anything. When i got put in a holding cell late at night they asked what meds i was on, i told them i was taking codeine before bed everynight (at the time that was what i was prescribed) if they had held me over night i would have had to go without my meds, luckily they let me leave at something stupid like 1am.

But when i mentioned would you have given me them had i had to stay she said no. I bet i wouldn't even get my nortriptyline now if they locked me up over night and i fucking NEED that stuff.

Btw i had been arrested cause of some jerks vendetta with a bullshit line of 'we have to investigate every claim' meaning they have to lock me in a cell and interrogate me till 1am with no way of me ever getting the meds i really do HAVE to have when i did nothing wrong but dump his ass.

In NJ you suffer, I think most jails will more likely than not make you suffer. Most will also not prescribe benzos or opiates or other highly abusable drugs even if you are legitimately prescribed them on the street.

I have a slightly different question. If you get the absolute crap beat out of you (bones broken or stabbed or a digit amputated or similar) in a prison altercation and you have to receive extended medical attention, what will typically happen with pain medicine? I'm talking about something serious, not something you can walk off.

You get transfered to a prison hospital.

CSP's don't usually allow methadone/subs, you W/D and you WD HARD. Talk about sleepless nights.

edit: dont have much experience w/ jail, I was talkin about prison. probably some differences in protocol.

Fiancee ended up bein transported to a local ER from the prison and the guards refused pain meds on his behalf. Fuckin idiots! 27 stitches later he was back in medical at prison with ibuprofen, 200 mgs.
Also, I passed 3 kidney stones, passed out, went into labor all in 2 hours before they even took me to the hospital. They did try to say no pain meds for me but luckily my dr was there doin rounds and in no uncertain terms told the deputies to fuck off and gave them to me anyway.
Cops are just dicks, in and out of jails/prisons.

RedLeader, in the UK you should always be assessed by a prison doctor and treated appropriately. If it is serious you will be taken to hospital. If a doctor prescribes some medication, the guards are obliged to give it and when the patient is re-assessed by the doctor they will check if this has happened. Unfortunately it is really hard to get anything other than codeine/tramadol; anyone requiring stronger analgesia usually has to be an inpatient or a chronic pain patient under the care of a pain specialist.. it is rare to be discharged with anything stronger. For the purposes of deciding if a patient can be discharged or needs to remain an inpatiend, prison is considered the same as being at home, so someone requiring strong opioids would have to remain in hospital..

I have no idea about the US, sorry!

In TDC (Texas prison) I had a wisdom tooth pulled and they gave me absolutely nothing for pain. I didn't care though, that tooth hurt so bad i wanted it out at any cost. I was eating a meal an hour later .

Here in FL. I went in for 30 days. I was taking 60mg methadone & 4mg clonazepam (for seizures) daily, and they put me in the infirmary for the first 4 days, giving clonidine & valium (5mg 2X a day) for 3 days. They then put me on dilantin to prevent seizures. It really sucked. When the nurses would come around they would ask if you had nausea, pain, or diarreah & give promethazine, ibuprofen, or immodium for any of those. I would say I was nauseous so I got promethazine to help me sleep. (they dont give benedryl or anything & I didn't slep for 5 days) I found the best way to feel better was laughing at all the stupid shit that goes on in there & at the dickhead guards. And the reason I was in there...? I had a seizure while driving & got a DUI because I had THC from smoking 3 days before hand. It was so fucking stupid that all I could do was laugh. Fuck all of them. The cops, the jury, the lawyers, the judge, the system... & fuck you too for reading this. :D

In NM I got clonidine + trazadone for 7 days. They actually took me to a hospital first to check me out and gave me ativan. She gave me a script too, but the doc in jail wouldn't give me any. The nurse fought for me, but to no avail.
Atlantic county NJ, they give you librium. Ironically, 3 years ago at same jail, my wife got nothing. And yes, they UA first.
Deaths from w/d are not unheard of. They usually just get reported as "natural causes" or something stupid like that.

In Texas I was in the Harris County Jail. They prefer you suffer and what is more, they make it their business to make sure that you do.
