Hi, I've been prescribed daily 20mg of Vyvanse by my Psych for about 2 1/2 years now. I've started noticing some weird side effects of it; and a decrease of it's effectiveness. Is there a better (still safe) daily amphetamine that can be prescribed to me; or is Vyvanse really the only one that is known to be safe in long term.

Side effects I've noticed:
(Time taken for it to usually occur)

Hunger (1/2hr in after taking it WITH FOOD*)
Drowsiness (45 mins in)
Focus + Euphoria FINALLY Kicks in (1-2hrs in) USED TO TAKE A LOT LESS TIME
Bathroom Break (very weird effect that happens everyday) (2 1/2hrs in)
Focus + Euphoria is gone (3 1/2 - 5 hrs in)

Now here is where it starts getting weirder. If I don't have a large breakfast that day, I noticed that I have three very weird side effects:

Shakiness
Bad Paranoia

Dizziness / Lighthead

Those side effects are not that weird (i.e. bathroom break = very weird effect? wtf?). D-amp (active constituent of Vyvanse) is about as smooth as it gets when it comes to stimulants. Perhaps you should talk to your doctor about adjusting your dose and make sure you are staying hydrated and nourished. Also avoid caffeine/nicotine/other stimulants.

I meant to bullet that; Vyvanse actually empties my stomach for me. It sometimes causes diarrhea.

Would you advise switching over to Dexedrine?

Well, amphetamine is a diuretic just like many stimulants so running for the bathroom isn't an uncommon side effect. I've yet to try Vyvanse myself, but I am Rx'd Dexedrine and from what I understand Vyvanse is supposed to be an even smoother version of Dexedrine that prevents that dopaminergic atom bomb of pure d-amp hitting you all at once followed by the inevitable crash.

But yeah, talk to your doctor.

Having the runs from amphetamine isn't that weird. There's a funny effect that either increases GI motility if bowel activity is high or decreases GI motility when the smooth muscle of the tract is relaxed. With regards to the other effects; in time you build up a tolerance to the stuff which will decrease the subjective pleasure derived from the substance but makes it seem like the negative side-effects are more pronounced.

In my speed days i noticed this effect too, at some point it's more of an adrenaline rush than anything, it will have a less dramatic effect on dopamine which will not be able to cushion the 'adrenaline blow' so to speak once your dose is starting to wear off.

Hope that makes sense, i'm a little high. In any event you should discuss the decreased effectiveness with your doctor. He'll probably increase your dose at first and might switch you over to something more suited should the need arise.
