The mammalian body has a highly developed immune system which guards against continuous invading protein attacks and aims at preventing, attenuating or repairing the inflicted damage.

It is conceivable that through evolution analogous biological protective systems have been evolved against non-protein attacks.

There is emerging evidence that lipid endocannabinoid signaling through cannabinoid 2 (CB₂) receptors may represent an example/part of such a protective system/armamentarium.

Inflammation/tissue injury triggers rapid elevations in local endocannabinoid levels, which in turn regulate signaling responses in immune and other cells modulating their critical functions.

Changes in endocannabinoid levels and/or CB₂ receptor expressions have been reported in almost all diseases affecting humans, ranging from cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, liver, kidney, neurodegenerative, psychiatric, bone, skin, autoimmune, lung disorders to pain and cancer, and modulating CB₂ receptor activity holds tremendous therapeutic potential in these pathologies.

No it doesn't. Haven't you read the law?

Section 812. Schedules of Controlled Substances

...

(b) Placement on schedules; findings required

Except where control is required by United States obligations under an international treaty, convention, or protocol, in effect on October 27, 1970, and except in the case of an immediate precursor, a drug or other substance may not be placed in any schedule unless the findings required for such schedule are made with respect to such drug or other substance. The findings required for each of the schedules are as follows:

(1) Schedule I.--

(A) The drug or other substance has a high potential for abuse.

(B) The drug or other substance has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States.

(C) There is a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or other substance under medical supervision.

...

Schedule I

...

(10) Marihuana.

Obviously the findings of this new study must be invalid.

Sorry for the cynicism, but this isn't the first time the cancer-fighting properties of marijuana have been clinically proven. This study will get no media attention, the same as the last one. Mass media (internet excluded) only publicizes socially accepted truths. Marijuana ruins lives is a more socially acceptable truth and the government will continue to regulate marijuana in direct violation of their own laws.

I'm at least glad to see this coming from NIH and just just some random study from another part of the world. It seems to me that until the US gov't produces evidence (not that they haven't already they just seem to not give it due justice in terms fo press) for the use of medical marijuana there's not a chance in the world of getting ti moved down to schedule 2.

what government study exactly?

Well it is a study (so to speak) conducted by the US government. The actual title is "Is lipid signaling through cannabinoid 2 receptors part of a protective system?" I don't know how the headline was extrapolated.

The "study" wasn't a study at all, but a review of many other studies relevant to cannabinoid receptors and health, and the headline is pure melodrama. The review stated that stimulation of CB2 receptors has helped reduce tumours in some studies, while aiding their growth in others.
