vodka

Vodka is a touchy subject.
Everything important has already been said, except a few brand recommendations.
-Chopin Vodka & Belevedere in my opinion are superiour to Grey Goose. By no means am i 'dissing' the Goose, just know that there are even smoother vodkas.
But the point of this thread is how to mask the taste and not get a hangover. don't waste your money on premium vodkas if you're going to mix it.
Get something mid-level...finlandia or finlandia cranberry, then take a red bull and mix it up. red bull kills the taste of vodka, especially in the ratio of 3/4 can of red bull to a generous shot of vodka. Drink two or three of the aforementioned concoctions and you'll be set.
not big on energy drinks?
mix with cranberry juice. especially finlandia cranberry w/ the juice. the flavor infusion will make the vodka seem almost nonexistent. though your brain will certainly disagree.
Another nice way to take vodka and manage to keep you awake.
1 shot of Stolichnaya Kafya (coffee infused)
1 Shot of Kahlua
Fill the rest of the glass with a few ounces of chilled espresso or coffee. Top with some fresh cream.
This martini of sorts wakes you up, tastes good, and will get you slammed in no time at all.

I agree with bloody marys all the way, dont seem to give too much hangover.
I CANNOT function on a hangover there is ONE thing that can make me feel OK if I have to work or something & thats a great big shot of opiate.
Mmmmm fresh OJ, cranberry & a touch of agustero(sp) bitters.

mix about 1/3-1/2 vodka, then the rest mix in Cherry Coke, Juice Makers Tropical Passion, and Hawaiian Punch Strawberry Surfin
Very Very Good

Ari - No offense taken re: goose. As I said, it's the best vodka i've tried so far, and if I try better ones I'll gladly make them my new favorites.
About Chopin -- isn't that a potato vodka? How does the taste compared to a grain vodka? And would you recommend Belvedere over Chopin or vice versa?
Another good drink I've been thinking about lately: Peppermint Patty (vodka, peppermint schnapps, creme de cacao, chocolate syrup, and cream). Sounds like a fucking dessert, woo hoo!

Sorry guys but have to tell you that here in Poland (home of both Belvedere and Chopin) those vodkas are both what we would call gifts for the foreigners. Mainly because the bottles look nice but the contents don't make up for the price! If you want a good Polish vodka then Wyborowa is the one to go for. It's a grain vodka, there is an export version that's triple distilled and 50% alcohol by volume. Personally I always go for the 40% stuff. Another good brand is Luksusowa (not sure about the export availability of it). Zytnia is another good name here which may be hard to find overseas. The fourth of the 'big four' (the competitors for the local vodka crown) is Polonez, but the owners of that brand don't have an export deal so forget about getting the stuff. One of my personal favourites is called Siwucha, which is a vodka that has gone unchanged since the 1950 (still has the same label and is sealed with a cork that then has wax poured over it). The stuff is a bit close to home distilled (bimber as we call it) for some tastes but if you can track down a bottle then try it (well frozen of course). Figures for the last year I have data for (1996) show that there were over 1000 brands of vodka based drinks with over 400 plain/clear/unfavoured vodkas!
There are also vodka-based drinks (either flavoured vodka or liqueur based on vodka). They are drunk at room temperature. The easiest to find outside Poland is Zubrowka (because like Wyborowa the brand name outside Poland is owned by Pernod-Richard). Often called bison grass vodka because each bottle has a long blade of bison grass in it, the grass gives a very distinctive flavour. Mix it with apple juice and it tastes almost exactly like apple pie! You just have to try it to believe how similar the tastes are. Miodowka is a sweet vodka made with/from honey but it's hard to find even here. Pieprzowka is a pepper vodka good for cold, make it yourself by adding some pepper corns to a bottle of vodka and leaving for a week. Krupnik is another sweet vodka made from distilling mead, great with a cup of coffee. Sliwowica is a plum spirit which kicks like a mule on PCP. People tend to make it themselves in the mountains, an old mountain tradition is to bury a barrel of the stuff when a daughter is born so that there is something good to drink at her wedding (Polish weddings tend to be quite alcoholic affairs spread over a day and a half, up in the mountains they stretch from at least two days to a week, the general rule is to allow a bottle and a half for every guest per day!!!) Finally the only vodka with metal in it Goldwasser. The Germanic name comes from Gdansk (used to be a German city). It's very sweet vodka and has gold flakes floating in the bottle (VERY thin gold flakes). Recommended to try at least once, it's also great with coffee (but in the coffee not on the side).
If vodka interests you check out www.polishvodkas.com If you are really serious about vodka then www.vodkamasters.com will be the place for you once it has been completed.
BTW I have to add that I do actually do some work for various alcohol companies here in Poland (I'm a corporate trainer) and so know about this not exclusively from trying to drink my way around Poland

And remember to freeze your vodka!!!

Forgot to add that up until a few years ago it was possible to buy vodka in bottles with the same tops as beer bottle in the USA (open-only-once type)! Based on the principle that once you open a bottle you aren't going to want to close it. 10 years ago a half litre bottle between two over lunch was considered not at all unusual, things have changed a bit now tho'.

Back when I used to be a drinker I always drank vodka. Absolute on the rocks most of the time. The trick is to let it go down slowly so you can feel the burn and taste it at the same time. Very smooth. But, my second favorite was to mix it with amaretto. Not the knock of brand but the real stuff. It takes the edge of the vodka but it stays smooth and it isn't too sweet like juice. You can use stoli if you don't want to pay the absolute price. It's called a godmother if you want to order it in a bar. I still keep a bottle of Absolute in my freezer so if I do want a drink every once in a while I can have something worth it.

Just been down to the supermarket to check a few things out. It seems that of the vodkas so far mentioned only Luksusowa is a potato vodka. Originally all vodkas were grain alcohol but after about 1800 potato vodka took off and then took over. Now grain is making a comeback. The quality of grain vodka has usually been higher than potato but potato is cheaper to make. I prefer grain vodkas but there isn't that much in it frankly. I have a couple of friends who get sleepy drunk on potato vodka and manic drunk on grain but that's not true for everybody (I did actually check that once by giving my friends a couple of bottle of grain vodka which had been refilled with potato vodka, they got sleepy drunk so I guess we aren't just talking psychological differences).
If you really want to try potato vodka then check www.adamba.com I've been told that they import Luksusowa. They also are supposed to have Premium (a range of vodkas, the peach flavored is pretty damn good) and the rather rare Rowanberry vodka.
Another link for you in the USA is www.palmbayimports.com who are supposed to have the full range of Wyborowa vodkas including stuff that is made here but not sold here (like pineapple flavour wyborowa)! I say supposed to because their current website doesn't mention Wyborowa.
One final place to check is http://www.polishvodkas.com/directories/fs_importers-search.htm for a list of Polish vodka importers in the USA.
OK that's quite enough vodka stuff. I'm off for a glass of Beckerovka with my coffee (that's an obscure Czech spirit similar to Jagermeister but nicer, rarer and cheaper!).

cranberry juice works pretty well as does plain old OJ. Or if you really want to get creative, vodka is the hands-down best alcohol for jello shots. (substitute vodka for 3/4 amount of water the recipe calls for)
as far as hangovers the next day, you feel like shit b/c alcohol absorbs the water and fluid from your brain. That's why you get drunk in the first place - dehydrated brain fluid. drink lots of water, if you're not puking, eat a good healthy greasy breakfast like eggs and hash browns and smoke half a pack of cigs. Gets your system going faster to get all that alcohol out. hope this helps

Well I had my night of fun with vodka. I mixed it with red bull which really tasted good, tasted pretty much normal. I had about 8-10 shots which got me pretty drunk, I had a good time and all. I drank plenty of water too but the combination of alcohol and caffeine still gave me a headache. That was about the worst affect though. So all in all, I had fun with the red-bull and vodka. My main reason for drinkin red bull was to mask the taste, not to drink it for the energy, so don't flame me for the wannabee energy drink fuck

What do you guys think of Skyy vodka? Someone gave me a handle of this stuff as a gift, I've only made a few drinks out of it, so I haven't got to see what it's really like yet.

'tis not an ingorant myth. alcohol is the onle molecule small enough to enter through the membrane in the brain and it dehydrates the fluid there. Even water can't get through it. Trust me, I sat through six hours of alcohol awareness classes and i've been to AA. we had to read a whole pamphlet on the subject.
