I used to get prescribed this....all it is a benadryl.......Will put you to sleep but a shitty drug all in all.

I thought it was a little better than Benadryl, unless you need to take Benadryl to stop pacing from something like (low dose) Prolixin.

YES, it is stronger than benadry...but an antihistimine all the same....

Im perscribed this, I think it's a great drug. It's helpful to go to sleep, or mixed with opiates it's pretty nice. It is an antihistamine but it acts somewhat like a benzo, overall it's pretty nice.

I'm pretty sure that vistaril is the freebase, and atarax is the hcl form, I'm scripted the hcl

What are you prescribed it for?
Can you elaborate on how it acts like a benzo? For instance, is it an antihistamine with anxiolytic properties or that it potentiates depressants as effectively as would a benzo?

Its an antihistamine with anxiolytic properties which makes it better than Benedryl. Its not chemically structured to benzodiazepines in anyway and doesn't effect the GABA receptors. It does have sedative properties which help with the anxiety and ability to sleep, though not a hypnotic.

Thanks for this bit of elaboration, K'd; I was aware it's not a benzo and does not affect the GABA system, but for the sake of clarification, it's officially classified as an anxiolytic as well as antihistamine, or its antihistamine sedative properties make it a viable anxiolytic? I suppose my confusion lies in the fact that there are plenty of medications out there that are sedatives but that do not effectively relieve anxiety. I wonder what it is about vistaril's sedative properties that make it differ from, say, diphenhydramine for example?

Thanks buddy.

Vistaril is a fucking nightmare unless you're an antihistamine fan. It makes my friends and I horribly depressed and despondent the day after a normal dose, does not work for anxiety and puts me in a sleep coma followed by days of severe fatigue. Benadryl causes similar but less severe effects for me, so I may be biased in that regard. It seems to be the go-to scrip for people the doctors deem too young/not legit enough for the almighty benzos.

hydroxyzine acts as an Antihistamine, sedative–hypnotic and muscle relaxant it increases effects/toxicity of CNS depressants, including opiates, barbiturates, other sedative hypnotic drugs (in other words its a potentiator) but does fuck all on its own
