Jane Miller, a teacher at a middle school in Newport News, Virginia, has been the victim of an alleged attempted poisoning done by two of her students. A teacher for more than four decades, Miller learned that two of her math-review students, ages 13, had been putting hand sanitizer in her tea. The incident was finally uncovered when another student reported it to school officials, ABC News recounted.
After the school contacted Newport News Police Department’s Special Victims Unit, an investigation began, resulting in the suspension of the two students. Each student is facing a charge of attempted poisoning, which is considered a Class-3 felony. These types of felonies require a minimum of five years in prison and a fine as high as $100,000. The two teenagers remain unidentified at this time but are currently transported to an alternative school known as Enterprise Academy.
“It’s hard to get into an adolescent’s mind. The class I teach was math review and a lot of them aren’t too keen on math and they don’t really want to be there,” Miller explained, and she added that she didn’t know the boy’s intentions or their motives.
Miller began to feel sick in the beginning of the school year, having stomach pain, a low temperature, and fatigue. The Germ-X hand sanitizer on her desk contained 60% alcohol, which could possibly have caused the symptoms. Miller claims she never tasted any trace of the sanitizer in her tea.
This case mimics another case of three students in a Fresno, California elementary school last year. The Fresno Teacher’s Association stated that a week before Christmas break, the students covered the frosting on a cupcake with rat poison. While the teacher never actually ate the cupcake, the students had previously tried to poison her coffee as well. She avoided poisoning as one student knocked the poisoned cup of out her hand.
