HESPERIA • A couple is behind bars after a video surfaced of them allowing their 23-month-old child to use a marijuana pipe, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Hesperia station officials said.

“(The video) depicts the child placing the (pipe) up to his mouth and he sucks on it, pulls it away, sucks on it, pulls it way. And it’s done about three times,” Deputy Lisa Guerra of the Hesperia station. “And the pipe does have some marijuana residue in it.”

Guerra received a tip Saturday from a concerned person about Melanie Soliz, 20, and Blake Hightower, 24, being abusive to their child and allowing the toddler to smoke marijuana, officials said.

After viewing the video and confirming the accusations, Guerra went to the couple’s home in the 7600 block of Kingston Avenue and spoke to Soliz. Hightower was not at the residence at the time.

Guerra was able to find the instrument used by the child in the video along with several other glass pipes, she said. Soliz was arrested and booked for cruelty to a child and was taken to West Valley Detention Center.

During her investigation, Guerra also noticed a injury on the child. The boy was placed with Child and Family Services.

Later that evening, Hightower turned himself in to the Hesperia station and was also arrested for cruelty to a child and was booked into West Valley Detention Center.

“I have heard about instances like this before, but this is the first time I have come across one personally,” Guerra said.

Completely disgusting, how irresponsible as parents were they to do this. It's actually quite sad for the child. :X

on a more lighter note...

Both parents made statements they had medical marijuana cards, but neither could explain why they would give their child the pot then have the incident videotaped.
I think the answer to this is pretty obvious.

But although I'm all for smoking, the person should be able to choose if they want to, after learning about it themselves.
Sort of the same evil involved when parents baptise their child before he/she even understands speech.

Did anyone read that the child actually inhaled cannabis smoke?
It seemed that s/he just played with it, not when it was lit. "The pipe does have some marijuana residue in it", maybe, but if it's not lit...
And they found an injury on the child and took it away from the parents?
Because parents who let their child play with an (possibly) unlit pipe certainly batter the child as well, right?

No child should be playing with a pipe it is not a toy,and it says the child inhaled when the pipe was put to its mouth. The child abviously must have learned how to do that some where via watching it's parents or smoking it herself. although I do agree slimvictor that they should not have taken the child away because of a bruise/mark most children get those while playing, I wonder how severe the mark on the child was?

^ There is a big difference between knowing how a pipe is used because the child has seen the parents smoke vs. the child has smoked.
The child can inhale, but it doesn't mean that there is a flame nearby.
That would not be "smoking", and it sounds like the child did not smoke.

Put something near a child's mouth and he WILL suck on it. It's instinct so a child will naturally know how to feed from his/her mothers breast.

I can't imagine it being lit though. Could a 23 month year old really take a toke without going into a coughing fit? And pipes aren't the smoothest way of smoking.

no child should be even in the same room as somone consuming drugs end of story... ask any health profesional or child caregiver. I have seven years as a caregiver for mentally disabled children. it's bad parenting to do something like this to your kids.
