It was revolutionary at the time. I'd never seen such realistic animation & levels before, and setting it in ancient tombs was a masterstroke. St Francis' Folly was the stuff of legends.
Don't know if you've played Tomb Raider: Anniversary but it's an excellent modern remake & has commentaries by the guy who designed the original game, which gives some really interesting insights into how he went about it.

yeah i remember enjoying it quite a bit. remember the training around her mansion? yeah, fun stuff.. i found the swimming stages really annoying and when the sequel had swimming stage after swimming stage, i just put the franchise away and never touched it since.
well, except for the nifty nokia n95 version which incorporates real 3d polygonal graphics on my mobile.
