Victorian Police and their searching powers.

I want to know what powers do Police have in regards to searching someone, more specifically at an event.

I know they can check your pockets and pat you down. pat down crotch/bras (with probable cause only?)

But I was mainly wondering about strip searches and cavity searches? Can officers perform these? If so do they need probable cause or can they just do it to anyone?

Thanks.

Interesting question; when I was in Melbourne last (late last year) they were advertising that the police had new powers to search anyone at anytime for weapons. I'm not sure how far they'd take this procedure though... if they picked you up on the street it probably wouldn't be worth their while to take you back to the precinct and strip you down. Probable cause is a dodgy issue though... it's easy for them to say they 'smelled' marijuana before the search because later on you aren't going to be able to prove the odor was there or not. :\

Not sure about the strip search and cavity searches.

But I do believe that they can search anyone anywhere without probable cause. The laws were changed late last year that allows them to search for "weapons" from whoever they want.

I think there would have to be some pretty stringent criteria met to strip or cavity search someone and only if they were being detained. I really have no idea on the specifics of it.

In Victoria now I know cops don't need probable cause to search you, which is bullshit, how far they can take this I am not entirely sure but would be interested to know. Thankfully I have never been searched under the new laws but I do have an acquaintance that was busted with drugs due to a search that was only really possible under these new laws.
