LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Nevada judge refused probation to a Las Vegas man whose 7-year-old son testified he was forced to use methamphetamine.

Clark County District Court Judge Douglas Herndon instead sentenced Rob Bassett to one to four years in prison.

Bassett's son testified Tuesday that his father taught him to use drugs, even lighting a meth pipe for him.

Bassett pleaded guilty in July to one felony count of child abuse and neglect. He says he did drugs in front of his son, but denies forcing the boy to ingest meth.

If the father did force the boy to use meth, that is disgusting, and I hope he rots in jail for many years. 1-4 is not anywhere near enough.

However, children's testimonies are subject to the influence of other people, and if prosecuting lawyers tried to convince the boy to testify in such a way, it would not be extremely difficult to do so.

However, from the article
Bassett's son testified his teeth and lungs are damaged from constant drug use. He also said his father made him sell drugs.
it sounds like the son is telling the truth. Probably.

I'm taking it with a grain of salt. This kid could have been coached by some detective or prosecutor to say this stuff; the police can be extremely manipulating to adults, let alone kids. While I don't condone the allegations, I actually knew someone who was using meth with their dad before they were a teenager, and as far as I can tell this person turned out fine and they even have a good relationship. Not all meth stories play out in the stereotypically inevitable downfall that people assume.

Yeah but of all drugs out there, methamphetamine probably has the most detrimental effects on a person's health & sanity-- so the stereotype is not unwarranted.

there is a BIG difference between meth and ritalin/adderall

no there isn't, its a small moderate difference.

giving stims to kids to shut them up is wrong period. some people need to learn how to control kids better. americans drug their kids way too often for an easy life...

exactly what the english used to do with opium hundreds of years back to shut their kids up. shitty parenting being the central theme here:\

Street meth at uncontrolled dosage levels is very different from adderall at controlled dosage levels. I'm not saying it's ok to give any of these drugs to little kids, but adderall and ritalin are significantly less toxic then meth (including brain damage and damage to other organs and the mouth). Smoking meth is also much, much more addictive and harmful then orally taking adderall or ritalin.

Opium isn't really a good comparison because opium wouldn't have caused many of the negative effects being noted in this article. Giving opium to a 7 year old is fucked up, but not even close to as fucked up as giving meth to a 7 year old.

hey when I was seven years old my parents forced me to use ritalin and adderall

Yeah, there's a slight difference, but its just as bad in my opinion. I know a couple people who were put on amphetamines even younger than 7 years old, one is a psychopathic bi polar raging drug addict, the other has psychosis and is convinced that the crips and the bloods are fighting over him and trying to recruit him, and claims to hear them talking about him on the radio. Both used to be very good friends. :\ And the second dude i mentioned, he never abused drugs. Only took his adderal as prescribed and smoked weed. He went crazy when he decided to stop taking it. And first guy i mentioned, psychopathic doesn't mean he kills people. Thats a sociopath.

I have seen research published that suggests amphetamines are toxic in therapeutic doses. Regardless, making your childs brain develop on speed is almost as bad as giving a developed brain meth.

EDIT: If the father really did force, or even allow a 7 year old to use meth, he's a terrible father and I hope the kid never has to be raised by him again. (if even allowed to see him)

caseface, being a sociopath does not mean you are a murderer. (neither does psychopath, as you said) Being a sociopath deals much more with a lack of caring about the needs of others, and to a certain extent, the sociopath themselves. While they are significantly more likely to commit crimes , even murders, (being as that they don't care much for others, and they feel less anxiety then normal people, making punishments less effective) not all sociopaths are murderers. Look up Antisocial Personality Disorder, that is the disorder most commonly labeled as "sociopath." Okay, I almost said I guess it could be interpreted as something else since its not a medical term, but I guess I'm wrong, it was the term used before Antisocial Personality Disorder (based on a quick google search)
