^ I have one of the
original wooden models (had it for the past 3 years or so). I like to let the 'Vapor Hash' (as I call it) build up over a few months; when I'm ready to clean it out, I take a couple hits without any herb (to heat up all the 'hash' and make it easier to remove) then use thin metal skewers (like you would use for kebabs) and just kinda scrape it along the sides, then use a pocket knife to scrape it off the skewer. Usually I can get a good-enough sized ball to last me a week or so, depending on how often I toke.
That's why I love vaporizers - it's like recycling weed. Vaporize the weed, re-vaporize the leftovers or cook them into edibles, then scrape out the stuff that builds up and vaporize that too. I can make an eighth last me a month of daily smoking (usually twice a day) if I'm careful with my consumption. Hash (real hash, not 'vapor hash') works even better - I recently went 6 1/2 weeks of daily smoking on about 2.2g. When I used traditional pipes/bongs/joints I'd be lucky to have an eighth last me through the week. Financially speaking, the Vapor Genie was an incredibly smart purchase.
The only thing that bothers me about the VG is the need for butane lighters - I always wonder how much of that shit I've been inhaling through the years. It's not like pipes or bongs where you just light it for a second - you have the draw steadily for about 5-10, and I'm not assured that all of the butane is being combusted. Not to mention the dust that flakes off every time you strike the flint (something they explicitly warn about on the VG website). I've tried the twine covered in beeswax that they sell on their site, but I've never been able to get the flame to be big enough.
EDIT: I see you were talking about the filter, but I'm not sure what you mean by "in the pipe portion". The ceramic filter in my model is in the removable cap, and I've never bothered cleaning it.
EDIT2: The Magic Flight pipe looks pretty cool. For those of you that have one, how long have you had it? I'm kinda dubious of handheld electronic vaporizers because they seem like they could become gunked-up or otherwise break (whereas the wooden/metal vapor genies will pretty much last forever). Also, the $120 price tag is a little intimidating for what seems like a bit of a novelty. That being said, I'm considering buying one.
