Ive been hearing that coming off valium is horrible and the effects can be permanent. Is this really true, and if it is how much would a person need to do each day to have this happen.
To answer your question, I'm no professional but to my understanding benzodiazepine withdrawal is worse than opiate withdrawal and can be potentially fatal. Benzos are controlled for a reason, otherwise they'd be OTC. I wouldn't recommend taking them daily, not for a long time at least. I took 10-20mg of diazepam daily for about 1.5 months and then temazepam for a little while longer. Admittedly, I stopped cold turkey with absolutely no withdrawal symptoms. I never caught a buzz from them, nor did I ever acheive a benzo high, and I've taken over 60mg of temazepam at once. Only time they ever did anything for me was when I was EXTREMELY depressed and had anxiety through the roof. Diazepam brought me right back to life. Go figure, it did what it was supposed to do and nothing else. Amazing drug...
I view benzos more as a "temporary-fix" drug or as an "aid" more than a "get high" drug. You have a hangover, take benzos. You're anxious, take benzos. You can't sleep, take benzos. You're withdrawing from some other drug, take benzos. You want to get high, take something else. You want to correct depression, ask your doctor for an anti-depressant. Benzos as a daily medication is generally a bad idea IMO.
