I am going in for a kidney stent removal on Wednesday. The last time I went, the doctor prescribed 10mg Valium 1 hour before the procedure, 2of 500mg Tylenol 45 minutes before the procedure, and 5mg more Valium 1/2 hour before the procedure. I also took (on my own) .25mg of Xanax 15 minutes before the procedure. None of it really seemed to help much. I really didn't even get any kind of buzz, let alone pain or anxiety relief. It hurt like heck.

So this time, I am thinking of taking; .25mg of Xanax 1-1/2 hours before the procedure, 10mg of Valium 1 hour before the procedure, a 7.5/750mg Vicodin 45 minutes before the procedure, and 5mg more of Valium 1/2 hour before the procedure.

Does this seem reasonable, or am I pushing the limit? I am not a recreational drug user, so I have no experience with any of this stuff, other than whenever I have health problems where they give me codine, vicodin, xanax, etc, I really dont' feel much of any effects at all. Even with Novocaine or Laughing gas at the dentist, they keep on giving me more and more, and saying "are you SURE it's not taking effect yet", and they have to give me way more than usual for it to have any effect on me. So I want to take enough that it will help me through the procedure (they stick a light, a viewing scope, and a grabber up your penis into your bladder and extract a stent that goes up into your kidney, while you are awake, with no medication at all, unless you beg them (like I did) to get the Valium and Tylenol or Vicodin).

So going back to my plans of: .25mg of Xanax 1-1/2 hours before the procedure, 10mg of Valium 1 hour before the procedure, a 7.5/750mg Vicodin 45 minutes before the procedure, and 5mg more of Valium 1/2 hour before the procedure, is this reasonable or dangerous?

No such thing as a 750mg Vicodin. You mean a 7.5/750mg? That's 7.5mg of hydrocodone and 750mg of Tylenol. Also, 25mg of Xanax is an overdose. You mean 2.5mg of Xanax (alprazolam?)

If you're taking 10mg Valium (diazepam) before the procedure plus the Vicodin you should be fine. Mixing Xanax with Valium and Vicodin is probably overkill. Do one (Valium or Xanax) or the other. They're both benzodiazepines with similar effects (although Xanax is considerably shorter-acting than Valium).

Double check your doses here. What dose is your Xanax actually? The highest dosage they make is 2mg (or 3mg XR)...so I really doubt you're actually taking 25mg Xanax.

Yes, I had missed the decimal point on the Xanax and have since fixed my original post. It is actually a .25mg of Alprazolam (Xanax). Also, the Vicodin is indeed a 7.5/750mg. I will fix that in the original post.

So looking at the corrected information (.25mg of Xanax 1-1/2 hours before the procedure, 10mg of Valium 1 hour before the procedure, a 7.5/750mg Vicodin 45 minutes before the procedure, and 5mg more of Valium 1/2 hour before the procedure) does this still seem reasonable? Since the Xanax is short duration, should I move it closer to the procedure? Should I just forget the Xanax and change the 5mg Valium 1/2 hour before the procedure to 10mg ( which would then make it a total of 2 10mg Valiums within a 1/2 period)? I am looking for all the help from the medication that I can get without being dangerous.

I dont think the alprazolam will make much of a difference and would just make you more likely to passout/fall over alot when mixed with other benzos (diazepam) and opioids (hydrocodone). I dont think you will need the whole 20mg of diazepam either because your mixing it with the hydrocodone and benzos and opiates/opioids increase each others effects to a surprising degree, where this combo of drugs is concerned the whole, defo equals more then the sum of its parts. I would actually have 10mg diazepam two hours before the procedure as it takes between 1-2 hours to reach peak concentration. Then the hydrocodone an hour before and IF I felt I needed it another 5mg diazepam right before Im due to go down for the procedure. Save the xanax for after to help with the traumatic memories! :-D
If I had a choice though I would forget all of the drugs discussed above and just have some I.v midazolam. Midazolam is used for a number of endoscopic proceedures as its a powerful anxiolytic and amnesic plus its short acting (1-2 hrs) meaning you wont be that bothered bout the scope going up your 'little man' and wont really remember it afterwards.
Also I just wanted to ask are you ok to use the hydrocodone for this proceedure? Hydrocodone can sometimes cause spasms in the bladder muscles which I can imagine is less then ideal in this situation. It probably not an issue at low dose but be sure to let the docs know what youve taken, just to be safe.

^Nice post.

Just to be clear, bunge is not suggesting OP inject themselves with midazolam. Just a friendly reminder that it may be an option the doctor may be providing.:)

Okay, that makes more sense. .25mg Xanax (alprazolam) or 10mg Valium (diazepam) before a procedure? 10mg Valium IMO. Make sure your doctor isn't planning on giving you other downers and/or painkillers with the procedure first though...

^^
Yep, lol I should have been more clear: ask your doctor about the midazolam, hospitals tend to frown on self administration. :-D

This reminds me of whenever I used have to go through any medical procedure. I would dose stupid amounts of Benzos just to get through it.
