Partykid, Valium is the best benzo for recreational use bcause of that long half-life... I have no benzo tolerance, Sometimes I perfer xanax cause there is no real hangover, But Valium gets me nice and chilled out even the day after because of how long it stays in your system..

And remember Valium will build up in your system if u take it a few consecutive days... You have nothing to worry about as long as you space each dosage with 4-5 days... You can even get away with taking it 2 days in a row.. The most important thing to remember is only take it as needed... You will see tolerance will hardly ever raise, and when in situations where you needed it the most its a godsend...

I also believe because of a shorter half life it would take your body faster to get addicted to a xanax type med because of all the ups and downs

I think V wd's are the worst of the bennies.

First, 'bennies' was the slang term for Benzedrine, the old-school Amphetamine tablets of the 50's-70's. Second, shorter acting, 'high potency' benzos such as Xanax have the worst withdrawl.

WHY?

Well, look at things this way. Xanax is a 'high potency' benzodiazepine. It's a strong GABA receptor agonist. At the same time, it has a peak plasma concentration that quickly drops. In other words, it really gives the brain 'What it wants' then quickly takes back what it gave, leaving the brain 'screaming'.

Valium, by comparison, has a whole bunch of active metabolites, and as such, has a much more rounded peak plasma concentration drop. In other words, it gives the brain what it wants, and gradually takes it back, piece by piece. So, the brain doesn't like this, but it's still not 'screaming' because it still has some of what it wants.

Think of the Xanax peak plasma concentration drop as a sharply ascending roller coaster, which drops into a near 90 degree drop once it hits its highest point. Now, look at Valium's peak plasma concentration drop as a less sharply ascending roller coaster, which gradually drops once it reaches its peak.

well shit i have been taking valium at 5-25mg a day dosages for about 3months. taking that about 20 days out the month mostly at 10mg a day. Well I just took my last 15mg yesterday, and have no possible way of getting more, I was woundering what my risks of sezuires are?

Yeah so am I. That's scary. God damn, did you at least do a taper? I've been in the same situation you're talking about except it was with klonopin prescribed. Everything was fine for a couple days then I suddenyl became incredibly anxious and incredibly depressed and shaky and my gut felt like it was in knots. I drank and drank as much booze as i could but it did almost nothig to help. Finally I was able to get to my psychaitrist and she scribed me enough to do a very gradual taper down at .5mg per week and then .25mg per week the last 2 weeks.

If I was you, I'd go tell your doctor about this asap. Tell them it's an emergency. The worst thing that could happen is he would refer you to a psychiatrist. But no doctor is going to let you have a seizure after you've told them what you've been taking since you could potentially die and that doctor could potentially get his license revoked and face a huge medical malpractice suit. Most likely your doctor will give you valium right then and there, write you a script and refer you to a psychaitrist immediately.

It's better then benzo wd or a siezure any day.

Mr.beam i hardly doubt ur gona get sezuirs after a few months. U probably will get anxious and have a little withdrawel but sezuirs, just like getting them from alcohol, take a BIG addiction, not just 3 months (not saying it cant happen). Ull be fine dude

You must be from my generation, as I remember doing Benzedrine in the late 60s/early 70s for 4/$1. Remember the Benzedrine Inhalers called Benzedrex? You could buy those OTC in drug stores in the 60s & my mom always had 1 on her. Those Benzedrines & Dexedrines, in the old school amphetamine category, were excellent.
Plus I see your user name is the old Rorer 714s8( ....as opposed to the Lemmon 714s, which didn't have the 'kick' that the Rorers did.

Speaking from my own experience (Multiple benzodiazepine dependence). Seizures weren't an issue. Overall muscle tension, insomnia and twitchiness were. I did use a taper plan though. Eventually I tapered down to using 10mg Librium (t.i.d p.r.n....which means three times a day, as needed) and then down to Valerian with a 60 mg dose of Phenobarbital to control twitchiness and restlessness (p.r.n h.s.....as needed at bedtime). In my opinion, however, Valerian is pretty much useless, and Phenobarbital extremely limited. A taper plan is the smoothest way to stop benzos, in my experience. Quitting 'cold turkey' will be problematic and unpleasant.

If it has such a long half life (some say 200 hours .. some say 100) than how is it possible to do it every couple days and only take a 2-4 day break without being addicted? Also, anyone know exactly how long the half life is?

You can find sources all over the web that say anywhere from 100-300 hours. It depends on how much you exercise it out of you, how much you flush out your system with water, your metabolism, and how much body fat you have.

And yeah, if you are serious about avoiding dependence on the stuff, once every 7 to 10 days is a pretty safe bet.

Personally, my body has an amazing ability to hold substances in for their max halflife so I have to be rediculously careful.

The most reliable source I know says that:
-Diazepam has a half-life of 25 h
(it is metabolized to Desmethyldiazepam, also called Nordiazepam or Nordazepam)
-Desmethyldiazepam/Nordiazepam/Nordazepam has a half life of 50-100 h
(desmethyldiazepam is metabolized to oxazepam)
-Oxazepam has a half life of 9,5 h

Hey whats up PK. Haven't spoken in ages. I thought I'd add my benzo predicament in the mix. I've had a history of heavy opiate abuse, and benzo use/abuse.

It's never been hard to get a script of benzo's for me. But I too am worried about W/d's again.

I take 3mg of lorazepam (Ativan) per day and 15-25mg of temazepam (Restoril) at night for sleep. I am not abusing these. Just daily use... As Rx'd for anxiety and sleep. I also take Effexor PKid.. Just had it increased to 150mg XR twice a day...

My doc is weird. He only likes to Rx short acting benzo's. He'll give up a script for Xanax or Ativan easy (REALLY likes to push Restoril... temazepam... offered me a script for them the day I walked into his office. He must be making money under the table on that one because he's got the advertisements and pamphlets advertising Restoril all over his office. And on the script he writes for D.A.W. (dispense as written) which means I can't get the generics... ehm ehm.. . ANYWAYS...but longer acting benzo's like Valium and Klonopin he doesn't like to use because of the "abuse and street value". Weird....

I get prescribed both xanax & klonopins. The xanax is faster acting, but is short-lived. Whereas the klonopins come on gradual, but last for hours.
I'm also prescribed 90 mg methadone daily for my spinal stenosis & I just made a salad of Super Skunk, Hawaiian Sativa & Blueberry.8(

25 hours is not so short....
Triazolam has a half-life of 3 hours, Oxazepam a half-life of 9 hours...

And all the websites say 100-200 hours as the half-life of diazepam, because they incorporate the metabolites with it.
Diazepam: 1/2L: 25h
Desmethyldiazepam: 1/2L: 50-100h
Oxazepam: 1/2L: 9h

That's makes approx an half-life of 130 hours.

I might be totally off track here, but i always thought the longer the half life, the harder it is to get addicted and the easiest it is to withdrawel.

I probably attribute that to cannabis having such a long half life, if cannabis's half life was say 2 hours, would that make it addictive??

Squidhead: they give you benzos and Methadone together? Doctors are usually too scared to do that because of the high risk for CNS Depression.

Anyways, so if the Diazepam itself has only a 25 hour half life then someone could take it every 3 days and be fine? Or do the other variables that have a longer half life also provide monkey's on your back?

Volume-A: It's usually the drugs with longer half life that are easier to get addicted to if you do them frequently, also they usually have a longer withdrawl period because it takes longer time for it to leave your system.

This thread is in need of professional help. In another thread I started entitled "What is the best benzo to taper down with?" everyone said the best benzo to taper down with was Diazepam(Valium™) or any of the long-acting benzos such as Clonazepam(Klonopin™).

It's easier to get addicted to long actors because you could take 10mg valium and 3 days later take another 10mg and you would still be connecting and maintaining the substance in your body. If you did this for a month or so you might think you're safe, and for a select few people you might be, but judging by the median halflife, you would get a withdrawal syndrome if you stopped entirely.

There's no doubt I traded one monkey for another at this point. The benzo monkey is a lot cheaper but it's a monkey nontheless. You know that feeling where every day you start to look forward to taking that pill to relieve the anxiety? That's when you know you're in trouble. With heroin, I loved being able to cure my pain, that was the beginning of the real trouble, when you actually ENJOY feeling the daily pain of withdrawal, and then relish in the ecstasy of instantly curing the syndrome and feeling just 'normal'. I actually enjoyed playing doctor more then the actual high itself.
