Seemingly we'd known each other,
longer than the few hours since we'd met,
and although I didn't know it then,
the next few weeks would bring us closer,
than a friendship nurtured over years.
How many times has this happened to me?
It seems a quite frequent occurance in my life.
Yet when it happens with someone,
with whom I might go further,
something or someone interferes.
My dreams and desires never fulfilled,
but at this point that matters not.
There is more to life than chasing a dream,
the dream can find me if it will,
for now my energy can be better used,
chasing something tangible.
Chasing a new melody for a song.
Chasing a new line for a poem.
Chasing a new paragraph for a novel.
Chasing a better algorithm for a program.
Chasing a better design for a web site.
Chasing a present for a friend.
There is much I can channel,
my energy towards,
and often the reward,
resulting from that redirection,
more than makes up for,
any perceived loss.
My friends continually show me,
that I know many who will be ready,
when the pull of the vacuum of the void,
is too much to bear,
and those who make,
the void so apparent,
show they are worth much more,
than being used to fill a hole.
I've enjoyed my life,
this past year or so,
without the vacuum taking too much.
I thank my friends for this,
without them I'd be floating,
lost in the depths of the void.
And aided by those awesome friends,
I'll continue chasing worthwhile things,
until a big bang fills my void.
