Hey BL

never been to NYC. i'm going the first week of January. what should i do when i go up there? where should i eat?

looking for some fun off the beaten path. everyone sees the statue of liberty, but what else is there to do up there for a man from NC and his woman?

First I would go to LastFm and look up concerts in NYC during the time ur here. We get some awesome acts and have great venues. In terms of food, well try Zagats or something. We have all varieties of food really, but I like the sushi best. Central Park is a must-see (smoke a blunt on the Great Lawn, why not).

Also, you need to check out NYC' s great museums. The best Imo are the Met, AMNH and MOMA. If you're into weird post-modern art, try the Guggenheim or the Whitney. Also, in terms of art, NYC has great archetecture. You might want to see some cathedrals like St. John the Divine, also the Brooklyn Bridge, Empire STate Building, etc. Tho it's a bit touristy, Times Square at night is kinda unbeatable.

I would also take a look at Harlem or some of the outer buroughs, just to get a sense of the city overall. Harlem is really beautiful and quaint, not nearly as bad as ppl make it out to be at all.

If I think of more I'll add to this. (HAVE FUN!)

Awesome street food, some cool museums and stuff, obviously good restaraunts as well, but don't forget the dirty water hot dog, pretzels and peanuts, chicken on a stick, halal food, etc. Uh, SoHo is cool and trendy. Village too. Good places to shop and have fun. Lots of places to hit the bars and meet people. I don't know, I'm from NJ and I usually go to NYC hundreds of times a year. It's still fun to me navigating the subway and buses and getting around. Walking around and looking at shops and stores is fun. If your into drugs, then you are in the right place as well buddy. Have fun!

i never been there but always wanted to go to katz's deli.. i know its so simple but i wanna try their corned beef and pastrami

Yeah longislandny, 2nd ave is 10,000 times better than Katz. Its a shame they moved from the East Village to Midtown.

Most people hit on the must see touristy locations, which is great. As a rule of thumb, I would recommend hanging out below 14th Street, or even taking the L train one or two stops into Brooklyn--lots of bars, cafes, and music venues in the east village, west village and Williamsburg. Many young people hang out in these areas

Lil Frankies and Frank are some of my favorite restaurants in the east village -- good people and food from Naples Italy. Really really fresh mozzerella and other food, great ambiance and lots of young people

Enjoy and bring a lot of jackets, its cold as fuck and snow is still everywhere!

This guy had some good suggestions. I would say Coney Island, but it's freezing and under construction at the moment. It sucks that when you are coming when it's so cold out, because there is more to do when it's warm such as central park stuff, The Bronx Zoo, etc.

Maybe look into some Broadway shows too. Avenue Q is very good and funny. If you go to a show's website you can find out info about showing up early and entering a lottery to win front row seats for like $25 each which is super cheap. The museum and concert things are very good suggestions as well as Times Square at night (although it is INSANELY crowded with tourists, especially during the holidays and weekends.) Also Chelsea Piers has some cool shit to do such as Bowling, Arcades, Batting Cages, and a lighthouse. Definitely check out the east village (St. Marks place vicinity) as well as Chinatown... there's lots of cool stuff to see around these areas along with good food.

I am not sure if you have a budget and what your scene is, but you maybe you should also look at the North American Events section for some good clubs, music, and parties.

Have fun!

If you want to go shopping, go to Union square and walk down broadway until you hit Chinatown. That's my favorite path, lots of shops that way. Bundle up though, it's COLD!!!

2nd ave Delis is better

never been to nyc but im make sure to try both i guess...i just know katz cause well its the most famous i guess

i still want to make a trip to philly and settle the pat v genos war myself..id go to tony lukes too to try that but from what i hear its pats or genos

I know it's super cold but I would still say that Certral Park would be fun- you can do a horse and buggy ride!

There is also the big tree/Ice skating at Rockerfellar Center.

Not sure if you are interested but you can also checkout some shows like letterman, etc.

I know someone else mentioned museums, but I think that the museum of natural history (on the upper west side) is pretty neat. There is also some shops out now at Bryant Park.

I feel like there's more...

Three words: Lombardi's clam pizza. It delicious and by far the most effective ROA for garlicy goodness.
