Utah AG open to legalizing medical marijuana
June 9th, 2011 @ 1:10pm
By Mary Richards
SALT LAKE CITY — Earlier this week, Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff announced that he is cancer-free, and now he's sharing more about how truly awful the battle was for him. He says he now understands why some people use medical marijuana.

Shurtleff shared his experience on Thursday morning's "Doug Wright Show." He said he was so sick while undergoing chemotherapy he couldn't keep anything down.

"It's kind of like having the flu because you ache all over. But it's worse than that," Shurtleff said. "It's just a horrible, nasty; you're being poisoned. Everything feels awful."

Someone suggested Shurtleff try marijuana to alleviate the pain. While he did not take that advice, he says he now knows why people would use marijuana for medical purposes.

"I'm open to it now because I've experienced (intense pain), and I've seen others suffer," Shurtleff said.

At this point, the attorney general said he's not proposing legalization of the drug for medical purposes because he has talked to people in other states where it isn't very well controlled and becomes sort of a free for all.

Shurtleff said he doesn't know if there's any desire in the Legislature to do anything like this either, but he said he will think about it more seriously now.

So a side effect of allowing medical marijuana is that some healthy people are getting stoned? Oh my god!

This is my state and I agree that we need to open it up here. My dad has a bad shoulder problem and I think that weed is the only thing that can take the pain away effectively.

I would give this about 1 chance in say... 500. The Mormons are vehemently against cannabis use (medicinal or otherwise) and they influence the majority of voters, particularly those in higher positions. As much as I would love to see this pass here in mormon valley...uhh salt lake(I would certainly qualify for a number of reasons) I don't see it happening in my lifetime.

Utah is 58% Mormon. I sincerely doubt that MM would ever be legal there.

It almost seems the mentality of the nation here lately is, "Well, our economy is in the toilet and we've accumulated enough debt to keep our great great great great great great great great great great great great grandchildren on welfare. Let's give this marijuana thing a whirl, shall we? Under the guise that we've come to understand that it's actually not as harmful as we lead everyone to believe."

Hey. Whatever works.

Yup. I live here too, and I agree - while I endorse medical marijuana, I don't see it being legalized in Utah....EVER.

I grew up in SLC, and I have seen first hand the delusions and fear that are preached abroad. They will villify the alcohol that is sold at the liquor store, but the alcohol in Nyquil is A-OK. 8) "It's medicinal" they will say. So apparently alcohol may be medicinal but marijuana or anything else cannot be treated in the same manner.

Ignorance breeds fear, fear breeds prohibition, prohibition breeds crime.

A step forward.
Change is coming.

Slimvictor your so optimistic about these stupid articles about "thinking about legalization" or w/e... but what you don't understand is that marijuana and all other drugs WILL NEVER BE LEGAL! NEVER!

what don't you people understand? Until people like us start getting involved in politics and start actually doing something to change our gov't, nothing will change.. basically there's just too much money being made by wall street and the US gov't by having drugs illegal...ex. Private prisons, DEA , police, product that is marked up 1000000 percent... theres NO WAY IN HELL anything will ever change until we get truly RIGHTEOUS people in the government and power positions from our kind of minds.. <--the righteous minds.

^ nobody righteous will ever be in the government, I think, because righteous people do not want to be politicians. If they decide that they want to become politicians, they can't get elected. If they get elected, they are unable to accomplish anything without the support of others, who they then owe favors to. Then they can no longer be righteous, because they have to repay favors...

The way that change will come is through the power of the people, not from the government.
The real seeds of change lie with the people.
John Lennon understood this.
Bob Marley understood this too.
So did Martin Luther King, and Ghandi, and so does the Dalai Lama.

The power of the people comes from solid information, and communication, which are both in much, much higher supply due to the invention of the internet than they had been for the past 100,000 years of human history.
Change is just beginning.

dude i still disagree with you, if that were true then we would have much different "laws" then we do now. What you don't understand is that the people mean nothing and the gov't controls everything. You just haven't opened your mind and realized this yet. That is why i say we (20-30 year olds, our generation) need to start getting involved in politics and be ghost to the political top and then once we have established OURSELVES in the seats of power we can change everything for the better.. Only righteous people are to be involved in my government. For instance if i was the president i would live on welfare (or the at the means of the poorest in my country) and i wouldn't increase my own standard of living until EVERYONE else is my country standard of living increased. Basically I believe people in government should only be serving others.. I always say;
"True power does not lie in what you have, it lies in what you can give."
