Lately, I have found a serious need to quit cigarettes. I need them to feel normal, even when I'm satisfied my whole day feels depressing and spacey, I have not slept well in months.

Quitting is extremely unbearable for me, I cannot handle the school day if I don't have a smoke before. The weekend is worse, the boredom overruns me.

I have a theory that ritalin would assist in quitting. While the initial effects may seemingly be worse for the addiction, the rush only lasts 20 mins while the harsh comedown persists for hours.

Similar to how a opiod receptor antagonist is used to facilitate a harsh withdrawal in an opiate user in order to shorten the withdrawal period, could ritalin be used to shorten the withdrawal period for nicotine?

The comedown would be horrible but I could probably manage if I had the satisfaction that all I needed to do was get through a few days of hell. Plus I could use other drugs to help out. What are your thoughts?

I dunno, stimulants such as methylphenidate always increased my cravings for cigarettes. Perhaps you could switch to an E-cigarette to help wean yourself off? It was somewhat helpful for me.

increased in the long run? I imagine they would make it worse temporarily since the comedown is like the withdrawal from nicotine, but logically they would also shorten the withdrawal period.

Weaning has never really worked for me, and I'm trying to eliminate cigarettes and anything that emulates them completely (even oral fixation) because the habit is what really kills me, i cant even smoke bud when im fiending because im so used to lighting up a stoge after a bowl pack.

Also, I can't afford can E-cig, as I don't have a job and thru various methods I get my cigarettes either for free or at a low price. (I also have access to very cheap ritalin)

You said you have access to other drugs to help out. Which other ones? I think if you stopped smoking cold turkey, methylphenidate could help you during the day with some of the withdrawal symptoms, but like you said can have a harsh comedown. I don't think it would expedite the withdrawal process, but COULD help. I'd advise benzos for a few days around the clock for the worst of the nicotine wd's, and then add the methylphenidate on top of them during the day for mood lift, increased productivity etc. Perhaps you could even take a little bump of methylphenidate maybe ~ 1.25 mg - 2.5 mg every time you crave a cig especially bad. I don't know if you have considerable tolerance or how much you smoke, so don't use too much methylphenidate. I'd use the methylphenidate as needed to control depression/fatigue assosciated with nicotine withdrawal and cravings and like I said rely on benzos for round the clock aid if you have the access. Hope this helps.

Benzos tend to reduce my inhibtions, and they clash with my withdrawal symptoms. Yes I feel chill, but inside is that craving and the disinhibitory affect of GABA drugs make me say fuck it usually.

However, the comedown of ritalin is different. I remember because once I blew some R and I remember the comedown being 10x more unbearable than usual (I was addicted to stoges at the time) which is where I got the inspiration for this thread.

Stoges pretty much do nothing for the comedown. Knowing that, I won't bother smoking a stoge prolly even if im on benzos.

For some reason, when I feel shitty like I do coming down from R, I feel so mad that I just suck it up. This is not true for the withdrawal of stoges tho, my body is so wierd lol.

Also, I only have access to a little liquor and some sleeping pills and ganja. The liquor wouldnt work well because it would come down too quick (whereas I could blow R afterschool, drink liquor and knock myself out with benadryl before the liquor goes away completely)

Basically, the main point is that during the ritalin comedown I feel so shitty that I don't bother with stoges. That's why I feel it would be more effective than just sitting through regular withdrawal with benzos, risking relapse.

I don't smoke cigarettes but everybody I know that uses stimulants (amphetamine and methylphenidate) smoke considerably more cigarettes when they're on stimulants.

That being said, it is well-known that Wellbutrin is an effective drug for quitting cigarettes. You may want to just speak to your doctor.

I'd avoid alcohol, but cannabis wouldn't be bad if it calms you nicely. I understand the disinhibition that GABA-ergic drugs can produce, but I still say they would help you maybe in lower than your average recreational dosages. What sleeping pills do you have?

Benadryl and azelastine (prescription antihistamine) the combo knocks me out.

Cannabis is tough because I'm so used to lighting up after a bowl pack.

yeah that makes sense, but I personally just choose not to smoke, it really dosen't help much.

I thought Wellbutrin just sort of replaces cigarettes in a similar fashion that a stim. like ritalin would?

Wellbutrin (bupropion) is a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist in addition to being a NDRI, which is what makes it special (and effective as a smoking cessation drug).

Another, newer drug, varenicline (Chantix) is a nicotinic receptor agonist, and has been shown to be more effective than Wellbutrin for smoking cessation.

ah I see. Unfortunatly i still live with my rents, they wont take me to the doc for something like that.

Have you considered using nicotine gum or patches and tapering down that way? While they're still new, electronic cigarettes/nicotine vaporizers are also something to research.

There are options for you to take a look at that don't involve going to visit a doctor to get a prescription. :)

Good luck!

unfortunally ritalin does not kick in the same receptor in fact no other drug usually kicks in the nicotine receptor or is a antagonist. ritalin prolly make u all chargy hyperactive n wana smoke more

so thats why there are prescription drugs/patches/gum. the electronics cigarette u can get off ebay, but reported to be very bad for you? dont know why.w

do your parents know u smoke?

its weird, when i first started abusing ritalin, i would chain smoke, cuz it felt so much better on ritalin. Nowadays, whenever im on adderall, ritalin or doing crack/cocaine, i rarely smoke, IDK if its cuz im geeked out and focused on something else or when its crack im just hitting the pipe so much i dont think about nicotine? i believe cigarettes is mostly mental when coming to quit. when i would smoke of adderall, etc..when it makes me smoke less or not think bout it, i usually end up smoking half of it and thats it, its weird..

I noticed that taking ambien totally makes me forget about smoking. I did it accidentally as I took my night medicines from the Dosett instead of my morning medicines.

^Z-drugs and benzos can have this effect, but they can also make you forget that you did smoke cigarettes, so I don't recommend using them either.

As this question has basically been answered, I'm going to close this thread. If anybody has any questions, feel free to PM me or another member of the BDD staff. :)
