So I did a 5 day methadone at an inpatient detox. I was admitted into the detox last Sunday and got out the following Friday morning(2 days ago). The entire time I was in detox i had a slight reserve to use one more time. So Friday afternoon when I got out I was feeling physically fine. But bought two bags, hoping that the 2/3 day rule still applied for me to become physically addicted again. The two bags got me really high, my tolerance definitely lowered. The next day (saturday/yesterday) I buy a total of four bags; two for the morning/two for night. Both got me nodding really hard. I did the last two bags around 10PM last night. It is 4PM the next day. I had a habit of 10/12 bags for about a year, almost daily.

I want to know if I possibly picked up a habit again for using 3 times. I understand there are several factors to this. I am currently feeling some heat waves, and slight discomfort here and there, but I'm not sure if it is mental or what. I guess only time will tell. Also perhaps what I'm feeling is because of such a short methadone detox that I'm feeling the end of the withdrawal phase? Someone with some input on this would be great. Thanks!

It's very possible that you didn't wait long enough after detoxing to be able to "chip" without picking up a habit again... at only a couple days out of a 5 day detox, your not really even fully detoxed it... it really takes about a month for the acute phase to fully end, even if it's minor, and if you use again before your body becomes fully detoxed from the H, you will go right back to where you were after even using just once or twice.

You're playing with fire, man. There is no way to come out of detox and then just "chip" and not pick up a habit again... you're fooling yourself if you think so. It sounds like you're clearly not done with the dope and ready to get straight, which is going to mean a lot more pain and misery.

Thanks for the reply. Your reasoning makes a lot of sense. I have not yet fully let my body and brain heal itself to normality yet.

I really wish I didn't chip and do it one last time. You're right. Now I'll have to suffer more again. I think I'm ready to put it down for good. But I don't know what to do now. I have some subs stocked up or I could go to a detox again and tell them how I fucked up by thinking I could only use once or twice when I came out of detox and be fine.

I hope what you're saying isn't a definite. I usually start to feel the full on effects of withdrawal at 24 hours. I have about 5 more hours until 24 hours from my last dose of H. I'll see how I'll feel then. But meanwhile some more input and knowledge would be appreciated... Not worth it for sure. It was my first detox and it wasn't that great.

Don't trick yourself into thinking you can use "successfully" after detoxing; it rarely works that way, if ever. Whether you've picked up a habit again after 3 days of use is completely irrelevant-you should just stop before it gets out of control, even if you do feel bad. And it will get out of control ...

While you are not doomed, you can always use safer techniques to help you do as little damage as possible.

Falling off the bandwagon is a part of recovery, yours in this instance is not severely life threatening compared to the alcoholic with jaundice...

Just sounds like u got by on methadone for 5 days. i understand that the dose was reduced but i still think it didn't break u of physical dependence .

This.

This is what most detoxes are like. You might have not even gave it enough time for the last dose of methadone to leave your system. Many people feel okay leaving detox after they get their last 5mg dose, but then as soon as it wares off, they are sick again.

Anyway, you did still refrain from using for 5 days and tapered on methadone so your tolerance a lot is lowered, and you didn't use a crazy amount when you relapsed so your still not going to be in as bad of shape as before you checked in to detox but... there's a very good chance you're going to have some minor withdrawals.

Before you decide anything, wait and see how you feel as the hours progress. You might get lucky and end up having very manageable symptoms and can tough it out and get over them.

If you do end up getting pretty sick which is a real possibility since you used so soon after detox and 2 days in a row no less.. (not good), then you're going to have to make a choice whether to check back in to detox and do it right this time, or find some other method like suboxone.

Keep in mind though that using more heroin at this point, at any level, (especially since you already relapsed and basically gave your body what it was still desperately wanting after only a week of not using), will just make things much worse. Every time you use again your going to get more and more strung out, leading to worse and worse withdrawals. You might have dodged a bullet this time and will be fine or end up with just a minor kick... but take this as a big lesson to yourself that "chipping", especially that soon after detox, just really isn't possible.

Do a search for threads on here regarding topics like the "casual use of heroin" and "potential to successfully chip" and see just how few people claim to have chipped even for a little while.. 99.9% of drug addicts can't do it.. don't be foolish enough to think you're in the minority. That mentality has destroyed a lot of us... (myself included) many times.

Good luck, man.

To report back in, I woke up a bunch of times throughout the night. It is now 8AM on Monday. Has been 36 hours probably since my last dose. I should be in full withdrawals by now. But I only have minor withdrawals symptoms. Bearable but agitating and prefer not to have. I do not know if it will persists on and like regular withdrawal get progressively worse... But I am tempted to do two bags if the symptoms worsens and I guess check into a detox again and do it right this time. Yes, detox is no fun. But I went in there with a reserve.

EDIT: They actually tapered me down to 2.5mg of methadone; had that dose twice. They tapered me down fairly quickly, and the first two, three days the amount they gave me didn't even fully hold my over.

Good on ya, it sounds like you're not feeling too bad. I honestly can't see it getting worse after 36 hours, I'd say you got off lightly there. It would be a shame to go through a detox, only to pick up a habit again almost straightaway. (it happens too much though, ime).
