Using Deionized Water

Wasn't too sure where to put this exactly, but as my use of this will be for psychedelics I thought I'd post it here.
I plan to use deionized water and my simple question is, if I pour out the deionized water into a glass which previously contained tap water, was washed with tap water but completely dried, will the glass contain the impurities of the tap water or can I pour deionized water into it and be confident that it wont affect any chemicals?

Also, just confirming deionized water falls into the same category as distilled water of purified water and so it wont contain any impurities that may affect/destroy certain chemicals?

What are you using this for? Most phenethylamine/amphetamine salts are stable in "soft" tap water with no problems. Any residue from tap water will still be present unless you wash all your glassware thoroughly with distilled water. Deionized water is not distilled water; though they are both purified, distilled or doubly distilled H2O are probably the best for dissolving ergot alkaloids, tryptamines, MDPV &c in to ensure stability.

well im no expert but there are differences between all those types of water:

-deionized is just that, without ions. meaning it can still contain salts or orther stable chemicals/minerals
-distilled water is just that, pure water, no other chemicals or ions, nor anything biological
-purified water... not so sure, as usually for me this means some water that is free of biological agents (bacteria, spores and whatnot), but contains minerals and ions and the rest. the bottled water you buy is usually purified water

when tap water dries out in a glass, it leaves behind all sorts of chemicals, actually everything that doesnt evaporate (as demonstrated by countless adverts showing washing machines being destroyed by water :P ). so technically if you dry out a glass washed with tap water, and then pour into it distilled water, what you get is a glass of tap water.
to get a glass of pure distilled water you would have to rinse it thoroughly with distilled water first then let dry then pour distilled water into it.

At the moment, LSD - hence the reason I can't use tap water as the chlorine would destroy it. Will deionized water work?

Hmm looks like I'll be drinking straight from the bottle then!

Also, in case it's worth mentioning the acid wont be in the deionized water for long, it'll be placed in and drank pretty much immediately.

I would use distilled water, you can find it at drugstores and stuff. No sense risking your ergolines getting destroyed.

Is there a large difference with distilled water and deionized water when it comes to the likes of chlorine? Deionized water is a lot easier to get a hold of, I couldn't find distilled in any pharmacy or the like.

Both won't contain chlorine, as chlorine is specifically added to tap water and not normally present in any water. Highest purity water is usually Milli-Q or water for injection; you should be able to get the latter at larger pharmacies. Of course, it is questionable if they would be willing to sell it. Perhaps if you explain you are using it for a supercooling experiment; you need deionized water to be able to supercool it.

The biggest difference between deionized and distilled water is the presence of bacteria. Distilled water is practically sterile (until opened, of course), while deionized water typically contains more bacteria than ordinary tap water. Not that bacteria will be a big concern, but ingesting them does carry a risk of course. Deionized water might also contain traces of small and uncharged organic molecules.

if it is used just for a minimal amount of time and just to split up a dose among friends, i dont think it will be a big problem using deionized water. you could also check the label of the water for any unwanted chemicals....

stores usually sell distilled water to be used as water for windowashing in cars, very cheap too...

The chlorine in tap water is your enemy. Other general salts and crud in the water are fine.

The traces of chlorine will be gone if the glass was washed with tap water and dried (let's assume by dried, you mean, you poured the water out, and didn't just let it evaporate - see below), before using distilled or deionized water. It's good practice to rinse the bottle out with the DI or distilled water, just in general.

But it is not necessary for handling LSD.

No, it quite definitely doesn't have any salts in it, since by definition a salt is composed of ions!

To bolded part:
Only if you let the glass sit out until it dries. When most people talk about drying a glass, they mean that they pour the water out first, and may then store it upside down. Realistically, then, you only have a few drops of water left in the glass to evaporate. So it's like a few drops of tap water in a glass of DI water.
A quick google search indicated that the chlorine content of tap water is spec'ed at 4mg/L. In, say, 250ml glass, that's 1mg - clearly enough to shred a few doses of LSD. (assuming that it's 1:1 by mole, 1mg of chlorine would eat ~4mg of LSD)
If the glass is emptied out, and only a few drops (say, .5ml) is left, you'd have only 2 micrograms of chlorine there.

This all is, of course, ignoring the fact that chlorine is volatile, and most of it will evaporate with the water (while it's measured and reported on a Cl2 basis, it's present mostly as hypochlorite ions, which are what do the damage to LSD), so little if any will be left behind.

On another topic, the mechanism by which tap water can damage appliances like washing machines has nothing to do with water evaporating, and everything to do with the bizarre solubility behavior of carbonates (particularly calcium and magnesium carbonate), which are present as contaminants in "hard" water.

i stand corrected. especially on the salts bit, was too quick to think things through when replying.
back to reading about the damages of hard water.... must temper my morning energy bursts :)

I've settled for just drinking it out of the bottle, I'll post here how it goes, if I noticed a decrease in potency etc.

Reporting back to say I noticed no decrease in potency and found this a nicer way of eating more tabs than usual.

Are you saying you threw LSD blotter paper hits into bottled water or ionized water, let them soak, then drank the water with the LSD? :)
