"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
As per a report published in a European Journal of Immunology, the use of cannabis can damage the body's immune system and poses increased risk of getting affected with specific types of cancers and infections such as pneumonia.

(...)

"These results raise interesting questions on whether increased susceptibility to certain types of cancers or infections caused from smoking marijuana results from induction of MDSCs”, said Dr. Prakash Nagarkatti, from the University of South Carolina and the lead researcher.

The researchers carried out their cannabis trials on mice and found that it led to the generation of flood of immune cells called myeloid-derived suppressor cells or MDSCs. They normally act as defensive against the diseases to get advanced, but in case of cancer, they help in the growth of tumours.

Cannabis 'may increase cancer risk'

Smoking cannabis may suppress the immune system and increase cancer risk, according to new research.

The drug triggers the production of cells that weaken the body's resistance to cancer, scientists believe.

A US study found that cannabinoids - active compounds in cannabis - activated biological pathways to generate "massive numbers" of the cells, known as myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs).

MDSCs are special immune cells that act as a safety brake on the immune system.
They suppress immune responses to prevent them getting out of control, but in so doing are also thought to promote cancer growth.

Cancer patients are known to have increased numbers of MDSCs.

this is interesting

one time last year(I am a severely chronic cannabis smoker) I was in the er and the doctor said my white blood cell count was extremely high. At the time I assumed it had to be the marijuana as it was the only thing I could pinpoint it on.

sounds like a good thing to me 8o

^ Yea very true. And melange, usually very high white cell count is a sign of a weaker immune system believe it or not. I know its pretty opposite what you would expect but I guess thats how it is.

sounds like a good thing to me 8o

If you have lupus.

The S in MDSC is for "suppressor". The function of MDSCs is to suppress the immune system

I have no idea what the significance of this finding is. Stoners aren't unusually disease prone. Look at all the body fluids are exchanged in a cipher. I've never gotten sick after joining a cipher.

my immune suppressant drugs cost $1,250 per injection, every ten days... Humira.

this is a highly carcinogenic drug(already ive developed edanomas, the physicians ive spoken with said that the two combined would benefit each other.
my WBC's are usually 17-21
mostly neutrophils,

marijuana works as an antiinflammatory(better/safer then most/nsaids/prednisone/trycilics/cortisone are barbaric and for sort term use~as effective topically with no psychoactive reactrion) by suppressing ones immune-system, for a short period of time... :/ it is shown to inhibit tumor growth, and give an apatite, settled stomach to cancer patients, wtf?
this is part of the benefit, and worded in a "scary" way.

id love to see an autoimmune-disorder/leukocytosis/anemia/precancer blind study with cannabinoids, or a published article, presented in public view! not medical abstracts for Sweden, India, Uni. archives ect.
their affect on cytokynes...

as i said in the cannawiki here, marijuana has been studied more then ANY plant in history, wtf...
why allll that study for, a weeeed man.?

Once upon a time 'studies' also showed cocaine made black men immune to standard police ammunition and larger bullets were needed.

that is all

I recall reading that cannabis does decrease your immune function, but it's a slight effect, and it's only while you are stoned. Your immune function goes back to normal when you're sober. This article is a typical case of taking a truth and making it sound a lot worse than it actually is.

I wonder how this effects the chance of sustained virological response during interferon treatment, or spontaneous clearance of hep c. Cuz i smoke and im on treatment, week 1 baby. 23 to go

I wonder how much THC they were giving these mice. Or if they were getting straight THC/CBN or actual cannabis.

Its kinda fucked, one bad study comes out and the media jumps aboard but if its a study has good things to say about cannabis it rarely gets any media coverage.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that that's definitely not true. In terms of humans actually studying the plant in scientific settings, I think that corn, wheat, barley, rice and other food crops have been much more studied then marijuana. In terms of drug plants, tea, coffee and maybe tobacco have probably been more studied then weed too, as have a number of other drug producing plants (coca, poppies).

Marijuana prohibition has been pretty detrimental to serious, non-biased, scientific research being done on it imo.
