"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
Never one to back away from a fight, Lance Armstrong is finally giving in and the cost of quitting is steep: His seven Tour de France titles could be gone as soon as Friday.

The superstar cyclist, whose stirring victories after his comeback from cancer helped him transcend sports, chose not to pursue arbitration in the drug case brought against him by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. That was his last option in his bitter fight with USADA and his decision set the stage for the titles to be stripped and his name to be all but wiped from the record books of the sport he once ruled.

Travis Tygart, USADA's chief executive, left no doubt that was the next step. He said Armstrong would lose the titles as soon as Friday and be hit with a lifetime ban, even though he is retired and turning 41 next month.

Still to be heard from was the sport's governing body, the International Cycling Union, which had backed Armstrong's legal challenge to USADA's authority. Tygart said the UCI was ''bound to recognize our decision and impose it'' as a signer of the World Anti-Doping Code.

''They have no choice but to strip the titles under the code,'' he said.

Armstrong clearly knew his legacy would be blemished by his decision. He said he has grown tired of defending himself in a seemingly never-ending fight against charges that he doped while piling up more Tour victories than anyone ever. He has consistently pointed to the hundreds of drug tests that he passed as proof of his innocence during his extraordinary run of Tour titles from 1999 to 2005.

''There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, `Enough is enough.' For me, that time is now,'' Armstrong said Thursday night, hours before the deadline to enter arbitration. He called the USADA investigation an ''unconstitutional witch hunt.''

''I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999,'' he said. ''The toll this has taken on my family and my work for our foundation and on me leads me to where I am today - finished with this nonsense.''

USADA treated Armstrong's decision as an admission of guilt, hanging the label of drug cheat on an athlete who was a hero to thousands for overcoming life-threatening testicular cancer and for his foundation's support for cancer research. Armstrong could lose other awards, event titles and cash earnings, and the International Olympic Committee might look at the bronze medal he won in the 2000 Games.

''It is a sad day for all of us who love sport and athletes,'' Tygart said. ''It's a heartbreaking example of win-at-all-costs overtaking the fair and safe option. There's no success in cheating to win.''

I love how the article says "never one to back away from a fight, Lance Armstrong is backing away from this fight."

I think it's gross grandstanding and a witch hunt, this is bullshit that pits the deep pockets of political junk science disproportionately against one guy. But meh....everyone knows who won the most Tour De France, nothing other than another person going beyond Lance Armstrong will change that. This is pretty useless and punitive in a douchey way.

Being a fan of lance, I support him all the way. This stupid battle has being going on for countless years and shouldn't be affecting his life like all this negative attention is. Even if he doped up once, the work he has done for not nly the cycling community but more importantly the the cancer community is so much more important than carrying on this silly battle. I respect the man for saying fuck it, I got a life to live not a thousand of hours trying to defend his innocence year after years

I'm sure he was doping, but then again i assume most top tier athletes are using some sort of performance enhancing substance.

My question is where is the evidence? every article I read never has any evidence against him. It's always some one just saying "oh he was DEFINITELY doping" I don't under stand where's the cold hard proof?

from reading Armstrong's wikipedia, it seems cycling is full of snitches!

Although, is it ok to snitch if the person you're snitching on is your rival?

All I want is a little bit of proof as opposed to baseless accusations. Is that too much to ask for, Media?

I think they should ban this whole faggot sport :) Then maybe I'll be able to drive around town without a bunch of spandex-clad douches riding 15mph on the street in front of me.

I am not sure how to think about all of this.
On the one hand, if he was doping, it goes against the rules, and he should have been punished when it happened.
On the other hand, I respect Armstrong, and hope that he wasn't doping. Maybe this makes me feel that they should not be concerned with it at this late date.
But it wasn't just his rivals that snitched on him - it was his own ex-team members.

Roger, could you please keep the anti-gay slurs out of DiTM?
I appreciate your quirkiness and knowledge, so I am happy when you post here, and I believe that your post above is meant as a joke, but regardless, we try to keep things respectable and non-offensive here.

Lmao, I dont have anything against cycling, but thats just too funny.

For the record, I am a cyclist, though I don't own any spandex, and I ride on the sidewalks.
I also think that cyclists who ride in the road and block (i.e. slow) traffic are not only annoying as hell, but also somewhat retarded (and I mean this in a way that is not intended to be offensive to retarded people).
They have no sense of what it is to drive a car or how to not become an obstacle, as they usually ride 1 meter/1 yard away from the curb, which annoys me to no end, and they also have no sense of their own mortality, as they don't realize how incredibly easy it would be to get creamed.

Since this came up I will add the 3 things I hate about cyclists:

1. When they ride side by side. They ride side by side on the road often leading me to consider hitting them or going into on coming traffic and throwing a car accident, hopefully involving fire and explosions, into them.

2. They do not follow the rules and regulations of the road. If you are traveling in or on a vehical, even a bike, you must stop at red lights and stop signs. This is not an option they must follow the rules of the road. Off topic there was a news article where police gave a few of these jerks tickets and they thought it was a grave injustice.

3. Most of them seem unaware that they are on a rode owned by the car. We try to be aware and compensate for there existence but it seems like sometimes they just don't care how dangerous it can be. It's called sharing the road not swerving to avoid and assuming he's going to run the stop sign.

I also hope lance loses everything and it's like this part of his life never happened. Call me an ass but I think that would be funny. Maybe then he can get addicted to crack or heroin.

Still having his career and hard work destroyed would be epic, and teach those cyclists something!
