USA - Cops against pot ballot initiative

At the end of a heated campaigning season, local law enforcement officials are speaking out about their position on the medical marijuana initiative on the ballot in Montana.

If Initiative Referendum-148, the contentious medical marijuana bill, is passed, it will revert the state to the 2004 voter approved pot bill.

That law made it legal for patients in chronic pain or with a terminal illness to obtain and use marijuana for their ailment. Sixty-two percent of Montana voters approved the measure in 2004.

Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin said Thursday night that he is against the newest initiative to revert back to freer medical marijuana laws.

“The original law created an incredible burden on the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office,” Gootkin said. “The 2011 legislature recognized and acknowledged these impacts and amended the law in Senate Bill 423.

This has had a very positive effect on this Office.”

Gootkin said IR-148 is confusing some voters he’s talked to. In the simplest terms, Gootkin breaks down the measure.

“If you vote FOR Senate Bill 423, it leaves the law the way it currently is today,” he said. “If you vote AGAINST Senate Bill 423, it returns the law to its original form.”

Belgrade Chief of Police E.J. Clark said he agrees with Gootkin that the original medical marijuana law was under-regulated and hard to enforce.

A little context

For years, the 2004 law was imposed with relatively little resistance. Then dispensaries starting cropping up in business districts around the state. Large pot-leaf billboards and flyers were especially pervasive in Billings, but statewide, too.

Safe Communities, Safe Kids, a Billings group, was the main opponent of the 2004 law, claiming that legalizing medical marijuana has negative implications for Montana’s children.

Proponents of the law, like the Montana Cannabis Industry Association, argue medical marijuana has significantly fewer side effects than pharmaceutical painkillers. And since it’s a plant, it must be healthy, too, pro-pot folks argue.

There have been several pro medical marijuana ads saturating the airwaves in the countdown until Election Day. Safe Communities, Safe Kids charged former Attorney Steve Bullock with allowing confusing ballot language.

While other politicians advised Montana voters to do their homework before voting on IR-148.

In June, the Montana Democrats voted to support medical marijuana as a party platform.

The actual ballot language for IR-148 reads:

[ ] FOR Senate Bill 423, a bill which repeals I-148 and enacts a new medical marijuana program.

[ ] AGAINST Senate Bill 423, a bill which repeals I-148 and enacts a new medical marijuana program. A vote against Senate Bill 243 will restore 1-148.

i am curious what the negative implications really are for Montana's children if medical marijuana is allowed...
pedophilia becomes a rampant epidemic?
violent gang related crimes sky rocket?

Public high schools become drug dens with hundreds or thousands of students passed out in class or huddled together in hallways in a drugged out haze. Nobody graduates or becomes productive members of society, and the drop outs spend their lives in what is basically a vegetative state, stealing food and clothing scraps to survive, while pot dealers and their cartels control the streets and decide who lives or dies.

Or I think that's the opposition's view on the issue.

Keeping the drug laws had positive effects on his office. Yeah I bet. Without them, his office would have to downsize and get reduced funding.

It's all about keeping these people in power.

MMJ lost in Montana yesterday, btw:

HELENA, Mont. — Montana voters have ratified a 2011 state law severely limiting the use and distribution of medical marijuana.

The Legislature approved the law to curb what it called an out-of-control industry. The law forbids providers from compensation or reimbursing their costs, and it limits them to distributing to three users.

The bill was passed after Gov. Brian Schweitzer vetoed a repeal of a 2004 voter initiative that legalized medical marijuana. Opponents have contested the law in court and won two injunctions preventing implementation of its key provisions.

I wonder how many Montanans were confused by the language. A yes vote was really a no vote.

^indeed.

Cops like to be able to use marijuana as reason to arrest the comparatively liberal person with the marijuana. It is a political arrest, not a criminal arrest, because the marijuana user does not agree with the cop's political views and cops have been given guns and told to go ahead and arrest people who oppose their opinions.

Our system is an enormous failure.

Cops wanna keep it fully illegal because possession of marijuana arrests are some of the easiest for them to score. Tons of people and all different types of people smoke so its the easiest to randomly find when performing a common random traffic stop, it has a dank smell and makes your eyes bloodshot so its easy to get probable cause to search, and people who are stoned or are your average potheads are more likely not to get violent or cause them other inconveniances. They love it they can just scoop up anyone they please and it makes them look better at they're job the more arrests they get. Fuckin dildos.

Ya and what Ugly said^

If I had a say in anything.

any.thing. at. all.

I would surrender to Mexico immediately. Give CA straight over to Mexico. That way I wouldn't have to go to school to work in a pharmacy, and I wouldn't have to go to a doctor to get ativan.

Plus, I understand Spanish a lot better than I do Arnold.
