USA - ‘Spice’ ban thrills Frederick merchants

A new day dawned Friday on Market Street for shopkeepers near a former "Spice" retailer whose supply was gone.
"Things are fantastic," said Maryjean Clark, who owns Voila tea shop.

Until Thursday, a glass case inside Classic Cigars & British Goodies, next door to Voila, legally displayed Scooby Snax potpourri and other products labeled not for human consumption, but which people have used like marijuana.

On Friday, the case was empty.

So was the sidewalk in front of Classic Cigars, where, Clark said, every morning half a dozen people would wait to buy such products.

The city passed an ordinance Thursday making the sale and possession of the synthetic marijuana illegal. When Clark came to open her shop Friday, she saw a refreshing change: "There were no drug addicts waiting outside," she said.

"This is so cool," said Tom England, who owns the Dancing Bear toy store. "There's no drama going on."

Typically, 10 to 15 people would be in front of Classic Cigars each morning, he and Clark said. The situation started about eight months ago, when Classic Cigars started selling the synthetic drugs.

Until then, Clark felt safe even late at night at her shop. But Spice attracted both a hometown crowd and out-of-town drivers who parked illegally. It changed her comfort level and the atmosphere around her store, she said.

"There were some really scary characters," she said. "I would have to clean up clothes, trash, vomit."

"It was a serious public health issue," England said.

Police and medical professionals said they cannot treat users of the drugs adequately because they do not know what is in the products they consume.

"I witnessed people vomit in the street," Clark said.

Police responded to all her calls for service dealing with unwelcome crowds, Clark said, but there was little they could do to stop the problem at its apparent source.

England said he knows Classic Cigars was not breaking a law, but attracting children to the hazardous products went beyond legality for him.

"As a parent and as a human being," he said, "I found it deplorable."

After the ordinance was passed Thursday, Clark said, she returned to her shop to do some work and saw crowds flocking to Classic Cigars, buying up discounted Spice.

"Droves of people ... cars were pulling up," she said.

Sgt. Wade Brown went shop to shop Friday to let businesses know about the law before police started to press criminal misdemeanor charges. In addition to the maximum punishment of a $1,000 fine and 90 days in jail, retailers could lose licenses to sell lottery tickets, liquor and tobacco. Arrests will come later, Capt. Thomas Ledwell told the Board of Aldermen on Thursday.

"Hopefully, this is going to make a difference," Brown said.

"We have already noticed a difference," England said. "It's back to the way it always has been.

"That was a really tough time," he said. "I hope this is the end."

They always have to throw in "the children are in danger" You have to show ID to buy it just like cigarettes.
I can't imagine people getting dope sick puking on the pavement for spice. It's been banned here for months anyway.

i threw up the first time i smoked spice. it was way intense for a bit. but then again i was at my own place when i smoked it. i never had any problems after that first time

Not always. In my hometown I get ID'd for it, whereas (in the majority of shops) I don't get ID'd for cigarettes. I don't get ID'd for spice in a different town I go to but I think that's because there are less people who use the shop (I must be in their top 10 customers) and there aren't many (if any) reports of people getting hurt from use in the local area.

It's like when I was a teenager, they didn't ever ID people to buy cigarettes. Then again it was the 70's, lol. These stores want your business and want to keep you coming back. You can't find spice anywhere in my county because they banned it. Even the dodgy Indian stores had to pull it off the shelves. The sheriffs office has a serious agenda. Guess I can't blame them.

I live in Frederick and it's definitely a good thing for the downtown. It's a really nice area but remarkably shady around that cigar store. I went in to buy coffee and the guy in front of me was buying 4Loko and Kratom...at 9:30am.

Ha, nothing like wake and bake

OK THIS IS A BUNCH OF BULL SHIT! So, ok, there is some of that "spice" that will trip you out, and i had three bad trips on it, but now i have found some that works good, i guess ill buy it all up before they take it from around here. But alot of that stuff is better than a junkie robbing some old lady in the dark, or stealing the stereo outta your car, just for thier morning buzz, id rather see a shop like that then someone jonesin and going through some chaos from these freakin pills. I cant get off the fuckin things, please IF YOUR NOT A PILL HEAD, DONT TRY THEM FOR FUN!!

Police and medical professionals do not know what is in them, but the city can make them illegal?

They know that the majority of them contain JWH and AM compounds. Since they know this, they can take random chemical tests of products. If JWH, AM, or any other illegal series is found in the product then they can prevent more being sold in that shop.

I wouldnt want to be around people who smoke Spice everyday either. That shit makes you just stupid. Not high, not stoned, just stupid. I didnt feel creative or thoughtful on it, just kind of zoned out.

One thing I could really give two fucks about and I hope LE wastes as much resources on stopping this diet soda ass version of weed.

also if your gonna do something dumb like smoke spice fine just dont do it around me?

why exactly does spice appeal specifically to "children"
i am still mad they outlawed clove cigs in the US for the same BS reason

They used to in little caps. I don't know if they sell it after the spice ban. Different things, I know.
