'SHERMAN, TX -- On the heels of K2 bans across Texoma, a similar trend emerges on YouTube. Young people are smoking nutmeg and posting videos of themselves doing it on the web in yet another attempt to get a legal high. Deeda Payton reports.

While nutmeg is a popular cooking spice, local doctors say it can also act as a hallucinogen if ingested in large amounts. But, they warn too much can make you sick causing nausea, body pain, even convulsions.

This YouTube video showing a young man eating a whole bottle of nutmeg is one of hundreds about "homemade highs." It's part of trend that uses legal substances like items found in a pantry to reach euphoria. "I think a lot of the kids across the country when they see something on YouTube they like to try things especially when it comes to smoking something other than marijuana which they know is illegal they know it's going to cost them money to buy it. They purchase something like nutmeg, all spice, any kind of spice you can buy at the store legally and they go out and try it. They have to consider the consequences that's going to come a long with it," said Sgt. Rickey Wheeler of the Grayson County Sheriff's office explains.

Wheeler says it's all in an attempt to get a legal high and it's not anything new. It's just being advertised now on the world wide web. "Do you think it's showing kids different way to experiment with drug use? Yea, I think anytime you put something like this out there, theere are going to be those kids that see it and they're immediately going to go ahead and try it," said Wheeler.

Texoma students weren't surprised to hear that their peers are using nutmeg to get high, what shocked them the most was that they are broadcasting their ventures on YouTube. "Definitely don't think that's a good idea. I mean especially if you're going to do it there's no reason to put yourself out there and put videos out there of what you're doing while this is happening," said Grayson County College Student, Jarrod Milner.

While it may not be smart to record yourself trying to get high, it's also dangerous. A local neurologist warns that ingesting large amounts of nutmeg can cause nausea, body pain and even convulsions proving that even legal substances can be damaging no matter how much fun it appears to be on YouTube.'

I tried this stuff in the 80s. Downed about 3/4 of a tube of ground nutmeg by swilling it around in water. That was as much as I could take of the taste.

I was surprised how much it worked. I when at a nightclub with some friends who knew nothing except alcohol and was getting a bit panicy because I couldn't relate to anyone how much I was tripping. So I had a good time dancing instead :) One of the guys I was with looked like a robot as he only seemed to move one limb at a time as he was talking to his girlfriend. I was trying not to look too obvious as I couldn't stop laughing at him.

Next morning I couldn't get out of bed because my heart was racing like a humming bird every time I tried. When it eventually calmed down I spent the day in a pleasant dreamy state programming new sounds on my synth. Being able to visualise what something sounded like was quite interesting.

Interesting but never again! The body load is a bit fierce.

Is this supposed to be English?

Okay, let me rephrase that ...

Good thing the Grayson County Sheriff's Office has such an eloquent sergeant speaking for them, or I might have doubted their intellectual rights to be waging a war on people who are simply looking to get high.

People have an inherent desire to get high.
No law will every change that.
In Saudi Arabia, they drink cologne and perfume because of a lack of other access to drugs.
People will stop at nothing to get high.
It is high time that the laws of our world recognize that, and allow people this fundamental freedom.

And why is a law enforcement official commenting on this in the first place? No law is being broken and this is essentially about the mind/body's relationship with a substance. Perhaps they should quote a doctor or scientist.

But any kind of high other than tobacco, coffee and alcohol causes drug-seeking behavior; even audio highs on YouTube do that. First you start off with binatural beats, then you switch to nutmeg and before you know it you'll start injecting cannabis buds. 8)

Heh getting "high" with nutmeg is nothing new. I read about it in the book Naked Lunch about how sailors on ships would do it just to pass time when they didn't have access to herb or booze, and on the very old EDM/drug site Hyperreal.org as a teenager. I tried it just once and it didn't really do much for me.

I suspect I didn't consume enough as I just put in a spoonful of ground nutmeg into some Pepsi and chugged it. At least I didn't get sick. I did not get the effects like Edgarshade described but I didn't consume a lot of it either.

I knew one kid in HS who would apparently very frequently get high on nutmeg but he probably had limited access to other stuff since he described nutmeg to me as one of the best highs and drugs he'd ever taken. I found that very odd since at the time if you wanted hypothetically pretty much any sort of drug from weed, coke, H or prescription opiates, benzos, pharm amphetamines, acid, mushrooms, PCP, meth, to MDMA/MDA it was very easy to get any of these. It was far more easier to get illegal drugs than it was to get legal ones like alcohol and tobacco.

yeah I seen this done on a movie and knew about it since I was quite young... never done it though since drugs have always been just as easy to score as nutmeg.

I ate a bottle of it once when i was a kid and it just made me feel sick to my stomach. No euphoria, no high, no tripping.

It took me a few attempts. I tried chewing a whole nutmeg about two times. Nothing. I read somewhere that if you swilled the powder down with water you would "get stoned". I did this with as much as I could bear before the taste became overwhelming. I then went out and had about two pints of lager. Maybe the alcohol helped bring out the psychoactive ingredients because I tripped that time.

Years later I put a bit too much in a curry once by mistake but decided to eat it anyway. It didn't taste too bad. I noticed a somewhat dreamy state as I was going to sleep and the same when I woke up the next day.

I have a vial of Nutmeg oil in my cupboard, tried it a few times and it just made me feel sick. I wish the overseers would realise wanting to get high, expand the mind and other definitions of getting high is a natural want for some people :(

Of course legal highs can be damaging, just look at inhalants. The legality of a drug in the United States is determined mainly by its medical and abuse potential. Since nutmeg is not considered addictive (and probably never will be), and it has no known medical use, it will remain a legal substance. At most, these kinds of drugs would probably be put at the same level as tobacco and alcohol.

yo i laughed my ass off when the localnews showed this segment...kids snorting spice rack nutmeg, the news really made it sound like the next big thing...ive done it(to the best of my ability to stomach shat shit) and IMO its down there between Dramamine and herbal"ecstacy" on the AWESOME DRUGS LIST!.. no disrespect if nutmeg is your thing.

Cannabis is a culinary herb so don't think the fact that its edible will sway the sociopaths at the DEA.
Once Nutmeg is scheduled, eggnog will never be the same...
