BECKLEY — A generation ago, the younger set let off steam by assembling on a weekends for beer fests.

Times have changes, especially in southern West Virginia, and the brewsky has been replaced with a pill, an opiate that provides the abuser with the desired high and temporary escape from the trials of life. For some, though, as U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin sadly tells, the escape is permanent. “Instead of having beer parties, the kids are having pill parties,” says Goodwin, who has led an intensive effort in recent months to stem the tide of prescription pill abuse. Many in the concentrated war consider pill abuse a societal ill of epidemic proportions, pointing to sudden deaths linked to opiates, especially among the young.

“We’ve got to get the word out to these kids of the dangers that are associated with prescription drugs,” Goodwin said. “They think these drugs are safer than street drugs. They think, ‘Heck, you get them from a pharmacy, they’re prescribed by a doctor, so they must be safe.’ That’s not necessarily the case. They’re every bit as dangerous, if not more so, these prescription opiates.”

Goodwin is counting on a multi-faceted attack to the drug problem, with a heavy emphasis on education, along with treatment and rehabilitation, rather than locking up addicts with prisons and jails already bulging at the seams with inmates. “It costs about $30,000 a year to lock somebody up,” the U.S. attorney said. “We don’t have $30,000 to lock everybody up. It’s not the best use of our money. We need to do something to prevent our way out of this mess, rather than arrest our way out of it.”

I don't get it...

“I was talking to someone a little bit ago who was telling me — and this is not confirmed — people are shooting up with their urine, trying to get the residual effects,” Goodwin said.

But I lol'd at that. And then they advise people to throw their old pills in the trash.

In fact, they can be thrown out to with weekly garbage runs, he said.
“The way you can do that is, you take all the medications out, pour them out of the bottles, and put them in unsavory things like coffee grounds or kitty litter and throw them in the trash,” Goodwin said.
“You can do that on your own.”
An abuser is less likely to rummage through the mess of coffee grounds, egg shells and other discarded food items to scavenge for pills, he said.

yes there are those people out there. I've heard many people talk about how they didn't think to research their meds because a Dr. prescribed them. Usually the excuse when people get blackout drunk while on SSRI's and end up causing a bunch of shit. If used safely and properly, I'd think an opiate party would be safer than an alcohol party lol. A bunch of kids nodding out are less likely to cause trouble in public at least. It's not like most teens use alcohol properly anyway.

I'm 18 and i dont drink, and have been piss drunk once when i was 14, the first time i ever drank, i've drank alcohol a handful of times since then, and other than once never moer than just one or two, my worst was chugging 4 beers in 10 minutes other than said time i was 14.

no, as a younger person there are plenty of kids who will take percocets or hydros but would never ever do diesel, lots of kids think they're safe because they're RX instead of street shit. Although i'd think most kids who are that ignorant aren't doing more than eating a vicodin or two, i never knew any kids that ignorant who were actually going hard and using strong opiates often, most of the idiots who didn't know much about what they were doing would take 2 5/500 hydros then be "high as fuck" or low doses of other pharms...

How can anyone even comprehend this story? It is so riddled with grammatical errors that I want to bash my skull in with a sledgehammer.

I've never been to a party where people were passing out percocet and valium like they were alcohol or weed. Pills are too expensive to be doing that.

This is just one of those "kids these days" articles that old people love to read to feel superior about themselves.

There are plenty of beer parties now. And plenty of people were getting high on pills when older people were growing up.

This article is a joke & its all propaganda imo. No way is there kids handing out pills at a party. Kids still have drinking parties, might not be beer, its more like whisky & coke.

Wait...nobody parties with beer anymore?!?!?! WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF! I feel so square now. My friends and I still drink shitloads of beer and party. Guess I need to inform everyone down at school that we need to get with the times and have mass nod sessions.

They don't mention that alcohol is just as, if not more, intoxicating than pills. Its like alcohol is somehow less dangerous or less influential because people abuse prescriptions. This article seems to be lacking a good point.
