Perry, Romney Burnish Drug Warrior Credentials

Two of the leading contenders for the Republican presidential nomination sought to win votes by talking tough on drugs this week, with Texas Gov. Rick Perry calling for unmanned drones to overfly the US-Mexico border and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney saying the war on drugs must continue

Meanwhile Rep. Ron Paul, one of two GOP contenders who have staked out positions critical of the drug war (the other is former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson), has seemingly vanished from the mainstream media despite coming in a very close second to Rep. Michele Bachmann in last weekend's Iowa straw poll.

Going on the offensive against President Obama as he announced his candidacy Saturday, Perry accused Obama of being "an abject failure in his constitutional duty to protect our borders in the United States." Perry waved his right hand toward Mexico as he made those remarks.

Later the same day, at a campaign event in New Hampshire, the tough-talking Texan again laid into Obama, this time calling for the use of unmanned drones to track the flow of drugs coming from Mexico. The Predator drones can stay aloft for up to 20 hours and are equipped with video and tracking technologies.

...

Romney, for his part, addressed substance use and the war on drugs in response to questions from the audience, including one from drug war zealot Steven Steiner, who founded Dads and Mad Moms Against Drug Dealers (DAMMAD) after his 19-year-old son died of a drug overdose.

"We've got to not only continue our war on drugs from a police standpoint, but also to market again to our young people about the perils of drugs," the front-running candidate said in response to questions in Littleton.

They're just talking out of their asses. They can't simultaneously slash revenue and boost government spending, at least not forever.

They're fucking stupid. They don't understand that they can't continue bullshit policies and save us money/cut debt at the same time. Ron Paul is realistic. He understands that the drug war is a waste of money that, no matter how you look at it, does not come cheap to the american people. That guy sounds like he has a personal agenda as well. It sucks that his kid passed away but his kid was 19...I mean, I'm sorry but people need to learn to be a bit more responsible for their actions. If the kid went to a walgreens for his illicit substance, I would go out on a limb here and guess he'd know everything about the drug in question and that it would be pure.

He doesn't explain why continuing the drug war would stop people from using drugs...because he can't.

In the UK the media would hysterically attack a politician taking an anti-drugs-war stance. I guess this is the way the US media does things. Either way, the media seems to be calling the shots.

I fixed that. Actually though I think people are getting fed up with the blatant bias the "fair & balanced"(is that some kind of joke?) Fox news.

Are people really getting fed up?
Last I heard, Fox was the most popular way Americans got their "news".

It is no surprise that Republicans want to continue the drug war.
Even Obama continued it. He is the one person in recent history to have had the historical circumstances /popular support to possibly end the drug war. And he failed on that (and many other issues as well).

No establishment figure, coming from either party, will end the war on drugs without incredible public demand/pressure.
A popular uprising that threatens the politician's future could possibly become as persuasive as those pharmaceutical / alcohol / tobacco lobby bucks are now, though.

fox disregards the principles of journalism and democracy, when they literally try to make it appear as if ron paul doesn't exist... we get headlines like "romney, perry, bachmann top picks" as they purposefully skip ron paul.

Fox is garbage, Ron Paul is the closest thing to what this country needs. I am thinking a Rhino-paul ticket is the only way we will see him go all the way, but I would take that over 4 more years of hope and affirmative action anyday of the week! Although Paul has been polling surprisingly well!

Fox News was never intended to be unbiased. Roger Ailes set out to make a "news network" that had the opposite bias of what he perceived as the liberal bias of mainstream media.

Lol 'liberal media' praises Obama and the opposite bias praises neoconservatives like Bush & Rick Perry, while smashing real conservatives like Ron Paul. There's no real opposite biases in the media, just for gay marriage & abortion, or against them. Both 'opposites' of the 'mainstream media' support the needless wars the USA starts, along with bailing out banks with taxpayer money, and other corporate biased legislation that actually has a sizable impact on the country...

I certainly don't believe that Ron Paul is what this country needs right now. He's the kind of guy that thinks gov't should have as little role as possible, but I don't want to see social programs disappear in order to make gov't smaller. I definitely agree with his stance on the drug war and I commend him for not just spouting out bs along party lines and for standing his grounds on tough issues like that, but I don't agree with much else he stands for.

^ Really? Even all out legalization and stopping the wars? You don't agree with that :?

I just thought I should mention that because you didn't in your post...

Legalization would be a great start to solving a lot of the social problems today (jobs, gangs, drug violence, etc.)

You have to tackle problems one at a time usually. I think legalization is a giant leap forward in progress, and would lead to several more progressive steps next..

Ron Paul is a terrible choice if you enjoy chickenfeed handouts from the government and like not having a better job you can make more money with :D Oh and if you're an old republican that watches Fox News :p

I'm not going to get into a Ron Paul debate, but given that Fox News is essentially the propaganda wing of the Republican party it makes total sense to ignore Ron Paul. What Ron Paul wants for this country and what the Republican leadership wants do not mesh together at all.
