US oxycodone production question

I'll tread lightly here mods.. Last month I was following a story in the US on a certain pharmaceutical production company's mishap. Long story short they packaged drugs containing oxycodone (percocet, etc.) Into some very common OTC drugs on accident. They put out a recall for safety reasons obviously and stated the facility would be shut down pending investigation. I've tried searching recently to follow up with this story and can't find anything but some of the original articles.

The reason I bring this up, I am prescribed percocet for pain management and I've noticed the last two times I have gone to fill them, the pharmacy was out and I had to go to another pharmacy to get them. Possibly coincidence but I've seen a few other users mention briefly of this same problem in other threads. I'm somewhat new here and maybe this has been covered or isn't allowed to be discussed but I'm trying to determine if I need to look into an alternate medication at my next appointment if there is going to be a shortage in certain areas of the US. I will ask my doctor and/or call the local pharamacies if necessary but I figured I would check here first.

Anyone have information on this?

I have not heard anything about this however I have not been looking, nor am I prescribed any opiates. I doubt your doctor will know anything about this either. The pharmacist, on the other hand, will most likely be your best bet in finding reliable, accurate information. I was trying to thinking of other areas to look and inquire, but when you think about it you're gonna need to have a chat with your pharmacist one way or the other.

Good luck! Perhaps you will be lucky enough to get your hands on some Opana :)

Lol the online comments on the news stories I saw were cracking me up. People talking about speeding up to their local supermarkets/drugstores and buying the whole stock out. I don't know if they all dropped the story or it really wasn't a big deal afterall. I'll give the pharmacy a call this week.

I'm going to move this over to the regional board for North and South American Drug Discussion since its a regional-only question.

That first article is similar to what cnn and a few others had posted nsauce. It seems they aren't expecting HUGE shortages but then again I doubt they would come out and say that. I just haven't seen an article or press release since January as far as "production was resumed".

I've only heard this to be true with Opana (oxymorphone) since the ER version is only made by Endo. Nsauce posted the link above about it.

There really can't be an oxycodone shortage because there are so many different generics (OxyContin is just name brand though, so that's a different story). Percocet and roxicodone is made by a lot of different companies, so one company making a mistake wouldn't effect the supply that much. It would only mean that the one company would take a pretty big hit in the bank while the other companies would see an increase in revenue until the supply issue is resolved.

I suppose it's just been coincidence that my normal pharmacy has been out then. I'll call them tomorrow and let you all know what they say.

Hmmm ive heard this from some friends and opana (at least on the street) is very rare compared to the last year when it was the most common painkiller i was seeing...

A lot of pharmacies will tell you they don't have it over the phone. They are instructed to do so to elude robbers. You may need to go in there with the hard copy of the prescription for them to tell you they have it, and then fill it.

That makes sense but it's been quite the opposite both times for me lol, I went to the pharmacy and they told me they were out so I called the next nearest one and they advised me they had it in stock. The first pharmacy is right by my pain management office and also a hospital though so I'm sure it recieves a shit load of traffic which is most likely the situation I've encoutered however I still want to follow up.
