Gupta's "Weed 3" is to be aired Sunday 4/19/2015 . With Gupta's help and Obama seeming to be suddenly a little more open minded to a reschedule and letting "science dictate policy" in this instance... all Obama has to do is wave his pen.. but what next? I know you guys will have some thoughts on this... I and thousands of others want cannabis to be completely removed from the CSA, nothing less...

lol he blamed congress during that last vice interview, saying he can't do anything and congress has to change the laws.

He was full of shit then (obviously he has the power to reschedule cannabis/other drugs), he's full of shit now, and as far as i can tell he's always been full of shit.

Fuck obama, fuck his lame excuse for not taking action sooner or at all, and fuck his non-excuse that "its congress's fault, and i can't make them change the law".

I really don't know why anyone holds out any hope anymore that he's any different than all the other career politicos, hes not there to serve you, hes there to serve himself.

End of fucking argument.

daytryptr,

You are wrong and Obama is right.

Pretty much, the United States has three branches of government.

Judicial branch judges laws
Legislative branch legislates laws
Executive branch presides over the execution of laws

The president is the head of the executive branch. President Barack Obama could in theory create an executive order mandating legal marijuana. Executive orders have supreme authority and make whatever happen. If this happened the legislative branch (congress) could then impeach (press criminal charges against) the executive branch (president) or the judicial branch (supreme court) could judge the executive order unconstitutional. This scenario could devastate the marijuana movement and also devastate the democrats recent public policies in the next election. How do we keep out of this dooms day scene?

The legislative branch (congress) could legislate new laws or change old laws. The attorney general (currently Eric Holder) could also change the classification of marijuana (21 U.S. Code § 811) from schedule I. The president probably favors using his influence advocating the legislative branch (congress) approach. The legislative branch (congress) is composed of representatives from each state. If the legislative branch(congress) legislates marijuana legislation the decision includes all states. This fosters a posotive relationship between the executive branch (president), the legislative branch (congress), and the various states too you see.

Query: "can the president reschedule drugs"

Result:

As admitted by Attorney General Holder, President Obama has the power to reschedule marijuana without Congressional approval. The CSA states that any substance can be moved into another category by petitioning the Drug Enforcement Administration, a federal agency under the president's control.Jan 30, 2014

If the current head of the DEA won't make the change the president wants he can fire her and appoint someone who will.

Wrong. Public opinion on changing the law already favors change, and using elections as an excuse to not take action because it could "hurt the party" is a fucking pathetic excuse no matter what color the politico is.

And yes, he can change the head of the dea to someone who will reschedule, not that the current head is an incompetent stupid bitch, as shown in her testimony in front of congress re the sex party scandals involving dea agents/drug cartel members/prostitutes/local cops providing protection, etc.

But yeah, to devolve it into its not politically a good idea because the repubs will use it against us come election time is just about as stupid as it gets.

daytryptr,

Then we disagree. I favor Obama's recent approach of respecting states rights and utilizing representative democracy through our congress. This follows the values set forth in our constitution. Though your suggestion seems practical if only immediate short term results are what we want. If we abandoned the principles of democracy because of drug policy and gave the president supreme authority whats the worst that happens?
