Loads of tourists hit het Nederlands for the red light and the weed, plane loads of them from all over the world, every week. The red lights are available elsewhere anyway, its only the walletjes that are being tidied up. To be honest the RLD was a haven of criminality at one time but the last time I went to Amsterdam it had completely changed and had been tidied up.
I do know that not many Dutch people smoke the szhticky, and when they travel abroad it pisses them off that they are only ever remembered as the country where you can smoke the szhticky and for the red lights. It is a little embarrassing or so they tell me. I always like to remind them at this point of their role as the european hub of ecstasy manufacture and distribution, god damn fine ecstasy. Youve gotta be good at something, why not having the highest quallity drugs in Europe

Whether the Dutch can pull off discriminating against EU citizens, Im not so sure if thats possible. The EU has effectively no borders its a free trade area, but I guess only when it suits politicians.
As I understand it prior to the coffee shops you would have to buy your weed off shady guys down dark alleys, and the coffee shops reduced the criminality, youll still be able to get weed easily, just locals will sell it at a mark-up.
And please dont be rude about the Dutch, its not everyones god given right to view Amsterdam as their their own personal grow room, its their country, if they want to stop getting the tourism revenue thats their call, we've benefited for long enough.
I rarely log onto BL but when I do, you often have already written an answer that I completely agree with!
Its a bit more serious that I thought but I would say don't panic. I do not have time for a detailed answer, but realize this new government is holding on by one or two members of parliament. The new government is not even a majority, but they have an alliance with the rightwing/racist party called the PVV.
Closing CS are not high up on the agenda, the economy and immigration are. That being said, they may try to go the membership route. I do not think they will be successful, but who knows.
The entire concept of 'memebership' and exclusion of legal EU visitors was taken to court. In theory, no EU country can discriminate against another EU citizen. So you canno have, for example, computer stores in NL that only sell to Dutch citizen or permanent EU citizen residents.
THe problem is, that cannabis is NOT LEGAL in the NL, that is a myth. It is ok for you to have 5g on you and the CS can have 500g, but it is not legal to grow or import large amounts. It is still technically illegal to posses it. THerefore, the Dutch CAN discriminate and not violate EU laws.
So....it may happen, I am not sure. I cannot see towns like Amsterdam going along, but the new Justice Minister (a COCK!) says they must. Who knows?
As for the money part, I did a calculation and at 400m euros earned from the CS scene and all the other money stoners spend (hotels, etc) that is 0.05% of the Dutch GPD. They can walk away from the money from drugs tourism and not feel it too much.
Blau is right on the money about respecting the Dutch, most are quite conservative and they just don't like the reputation this place has as a center for weed and whores...LOL.
The border towns do have problems with tons of people coming over from Belgium, France and Germany. They cause major hassles for those towns, crime, traffic etc. IF they can simply require 'membership' cards for those border towns, I think that is a fair comprimise.
The new government sucks, and I hate them. I am not Dutch but live here as an American with an EU passport, so I take very seriously what goes on here. I vote in local elections (can't vote in the national election as I am not a citizen). The danger of this new right wing goverment is much deeper than just regulating dope, they are assholes of the highest order!
