Unidentified substances

Many pills on pillreports show unifeitified substances. What substances are they unable to test for? I know if it has any mdxx substance that should show up, along with cocaine, heroin, pcp.......the list goes on for the substances I have seen in the pills on pill reports so it seems like most substances in pills are identifiable. My question is, which substances would give unidentifiable results?

research chemicals, most likely. the classic example was 5-MeO-DiPT tablets with an "alien" or "spider" logo, which were first listed as "unidentified subtance" and later revised when a reference sample of 5-MeO-DiPT was provided to the lab and the tablets were re-tested:
