Boy Sets Fire - ahead of their time....These guys were doing what bands like Thursday, Brand New, and Thrice are doing today about 6-8 years ago; and they did it a hell of a lot better. I rarely see any bands say they were influenced by this band, even when it's clear that they were.

Vision of Disorder - another extremely influential band (this time in the hardcore genre) that barely gets mentioned. If they released their self-titled album today, they would be playing Ozzfest with Hatebreed and we would be watching VOD videos on MTV 2. I am also partial to these local boys (Long Island).

Coalesce / Botch - I'm lumping these bands together because they both had a very experimental, noisy hardcore sound. Again, ahead of their time. They blow today's noisey bands like Every Time I Die and Darkest Hour out of the water. Neither band had much commercial success, but were extremely influential.

Big L - just an amazing mc. I cannot believe how many people have never heard of him. Influenced everyone from Eminem to Guru. Harlem's "real" Finest (fuck you Mace).

Canibus - has put out two of the most stellar hip-hop albums of the last 5 years, yet many people think he dropped off the face of the earth (some say this is how Canibus wanted it). These two albums "Mic Club" and "Rip the Jacker" are just raw; almost no choruses, and the most intelligent lyrics I have ever heard, period. The only one close is Immortal Technique. Many people remember his early work and his battle with LL Cool J, however, many don't realize he has been putting out some of the most killer underground hip-hop in the last few years, and is clearly at the top of his game NOW.

At the Gates - Influenced so much metal it is just ridiculous. They often do not even get noted for a sound they practically created.

Carcass - Another hugely influential metal band. One of the pioneers of grindcore; flawlessly made the transition into one of the best death metal bands ever.

Testament - Helped create the sound that made Metallica billionares. Unfortunately it wasn't so lucrative for this great band. But they are still kicking ass and taking names, while Metallica makes "St. Anger" and struggles with an overpayed band psychologist.

Skinny Puppy - pioneers. True artists. Made brilliant work in a genre that's filled with a lot of horrible shit (industrial). Everyone in industrial was influenced by them. Everyone.

Mudvayne - Definitely not underappreciated as far as record sales, but extremely slept-on by critics and "real" metal heads. Unfotunately this band got lumped with Slipknot because of their onstage appearance (and Slipknot helped get their name out before LD 50), but that is pretty much where the similarities end. So many people consider them a nu-metal band with no talent yet have never listened to one of their albums. Extremely technical, subtle, misunderstood band. I think they should be compared to a band like Tool before they are compared to a really "heavy act."

I'm tired of listing reasons, but here are a few more artists worth mentioning:
The Crown
Shai Hulud
Faith No More - this band was so much better than the Chili Peppers it isn't even funny. To bad they never got the same respect / press / money.
Machine Head
Today is the Day
Snapcase

A MOTHERFUCKING MEN!
I tell people this all the time, At the Gates was such a wonderful band, too bad The Haunted couldnt have just been a side project.

Carcass - Another hugely influential metal band. One of the pioneers of grindcore; flawlessly made the transition into one of the best death metal bands ever.
CROSS MY HEART!
AND HOPE TO DIE!
WONT YOU BE MY BLOODY VALENTINE!

more like one of the wierdest death metal bands as far as style changes go. Carcass could almost be described as funky-death at some points, rofl. Or possibly classic rock-death fusion! But yeah some carcass albums are freaking kcikass, allthough id HARDLY say they are underrated/underrappreciated. Anyone with an ounce of metal in their soul knows carcass are some of the founding fathers of the scene, and were/are a great influence to
countless other artists. Saying they were underrated is like saying CoC is underrated. Maybe by non-metal people, but they suck, so who cares...

oh dude read your list again...im guessing ur talking about mainstream attention as far as being underrated? cuz wow testament (in our scene) is easily one of the most attention-getting names out there. they are like a household icon. trust me all hail testament with reverence.

coalesce...yeah they def have gotten pleanty of attention.

In all seriousness, id add Grip Inc to the list. One of my fav bands that most (metal) people dont really get into.

Definately agree with Faith no more.......another band that deserves far more respect is Mr Bungle............ I can see where Slipknot got their inspiration.......

Candiria

Lagwagon - They're in that similar genre to blink-182, but SO much better.

Integrity

And I'm not a big Boy Sets Fire fan, but I do have one of their albums, and they definitely were doing things that just now are catching on (but other bands are getting really popular, and Boy Sets Fire still seems like nobody knows of them).

Dog Fashion Disco- jazz one moment, metal/punk the next, funk one moment, metal/punk the next. They blend what they like at the most random times into their nu-metal-esque (but harder) music. It's about as random as Mindless Self Indulgence or System of a down, but no so consistent with their genre/style.

LOL is this the underappreciated Metal thread? ;)
anyway my vote goes to

mmm the velvet underground...

they are starting to get attention now but they are kinda being pigeon holed into the whole "classic rock" genre thing which is crap. they are in a world of their own...

i would also like to see more:
Joy division
The Cramps
Les Savy Fav
Liars
13th floor elevators (!!!)
Slint
Sonic Youth (Notoriously)
Mogwai
Bauhaus

...and mooooost definatly more bungle they were wicked

sorry to stray from the metal theme btw

I'll never deny sonic youth talent, but there's no shortage of it there. BUt i can't stand a single whole album by them and i can only bare a few select songs.

I guess I was talking about mainstream attention in some sense. I know that Testament gets plenty of attention in metal circles, but outside of that, tons of people have never heard of them. I guess since I am a big metal head but don't really have a "scene," (outside the hardcore scene) I assume some of these bands are underappreciated when maybe they aren't.

And as far as Coalsece goes, a lot of people know they existed, but their knowledge doesn't extend past that. People don't know how much influence the band had or how exceptional what they were doing really was.

I was going to post them as well. Just the fact that they are amazing as they are and have to play as the second supporting act on headlining tours make them underrated in my opinion. Especially when the tours are headlined by bands like Otep, Drowning Pool, NonPoint and American Head Charge; bands which Candiria obviously blows out of the water musically.

The fact that some heavy music fans have never seen or heard of them is just mind-blowing; they have like 5 albums (all of which are amazing)!

I didn't mean to make it as such, but I guess I couldn't help it. I tried to include a few hip-hop and other artists, but you obviously know where my heart is. :)

Feel free to steer the discussion away from metal.

True, but I think a lot of folks out there think they are a shitty nu-metal band (because of Roadrunner and their two sub-par releases before "Through the Ashes of Empires").

everytime i hear this name i can't help but laugh. just about everyone in miami and fort lauderdale was once in this band, lol

and i always thought boysetsfire was way more political than the bands you related them to.. sounded alot better too. maybe it's cause i heard them first?

Good list of bands, but I'd hardly call most of them under-rated. The Velvets are probably the most critically acclaimed group in rock history, and they've influenced 90% of the bands out there. Joy Division, Sonic Youth, The Cramps and Slint ditto.

Under-rated: maybe Jim White, Giant Sand, Bonnie Prince Billy, the Go-Betweens, the Chills, the Straightjacket Fits.

They are much more political than those bands. I'm just talking about style-wise (hardcore punk, with melodic vocals in some parts) has been taken up by so many bands, and not many people give Boysetsfire as being one of the pioneers of the genre.

guarantee you none of you know this band

MORTIFICATION

(At least the first 3 albums)

one of the first deaht metal albums i ever owned, bought it at a flea market cuz the cover looked pretty cool:

mortScrolls.jpg

one of my best friends and closest brother in metal has this tatooed up his entire right arm, by far one of the coolest tatoos ive ever seen:

mortMort.jpg

and this album was pretty cool too, if i recall:

mortPost.jpg

next 4 or so were ok, they progressed from deaht metal to thrash, with sort of a groove. odd switch. then the lead singer got "terminal" cancer, survived it, and came back to release another 10 albums (2 live 2 greatist hits), for a total of 18 full length albums since 1990. thats worth mentioning imo. they did a show in my state once (from australia) and afterwords hung out with everyone and just talked about their experiences in the scene. never really getting popular, yet having like 20 world tours, theyve seen alot of the underground and had some cool stories to tell. plus they signed my one friend's paper towel.
