Two treasure hunters in California got more than they bargained for when they unearthed a meth lab in a storage container.

Steve Bohannon and his uncle Ken won the storage container for $80 at an unseen auction, during which defaulted units are sold off.

They immediately called in the police after discovering beakers, pipes and dangerous chemicals.

Steve told KCRA: ‘We opened it up; it looked fine from the beginning, and then we found a couple of boxes that said “Danger, poison” on them, so we’re like “Oh, we better stay away from those ones."

‘And then we started uncovering beakers, a five-gallon drum with what appeared to be half full of meth, meth pipes, gas masks.’

The stash of old-fashioned but dangerous meth lab equipment was deemed dangerous enough to warrant a visit from a hazardous materials team.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department has launched an investigation to determine whether the lab was operated on site - at the CubeSmart self-storage facility in Rancho Cordova.

Detectives are trying to trace the former owners of the unit - who had failed to pay the bill for 45 days, resulting in the unit going into default.

CubeSmart’s policy is to sell such units on without searching them.

They have been made popular by programs such as Storage Wars and Auction Hunters.

Using storage containers as labs is not uncommon. Two men were arrested last year for running separate meth labs from inside storage units.

One lab, in St Paul, Minnesota, was discovered after the owner opened his unit in full view of two police officers.

Another man was arrested in a separate case in Longwood, Florida, after a passer-by noticed him acting suspiciously and called the police.

An unidentified woman appeared to be living in his lab, after an air mattress was discovered.

Yeah but what are some random kid and his uncle going to do with all that meth? Best case scenario they end up with a monster habit, worst case scenario they get robbed and beaten/killed in the process.

I doubt there was a half full drum of meth just left over like that unless if the guy who leasing the storage locker was arrested and taken to jail prior thus him being unable to access the locker.
