Concerns have been raised that a new so-called 'legal high' - reported to be more potent than mephedrone - could be used as a replacement for the recently reclassified drug.

It is understood A3A is mostly available online and, although stronger, is similar in nature to mephedrone which was made illegal last year.

According to reports from users of the drug, symptoms include panic attacks, sleep deprivation and heart palpitations.

Jim Weir, from drugs awareness group FASA, told UTV that A3A is being freely sold online as a "research chemical".

"Everyone knows it's being sold to be marketed for personal use and it's very similar to the early reports around mephedrone," he said. "It's definitely something to be concerned about."

Mr Weir is calling for legislation to be tightened up in Northern Ireland, so that legal highs can be ring-fenced in a new D category.

"We need legislation to help prevent these substances from entering the market and be sold freely without having been properly tested to see how dangerous they are," he added.

Ulster Unionist MLA Leslie Cree has called for a one year temporary ban on all legal highs.

The North Down MLA said: "What we need is a new system of one year temporary bans on all 'legal' highs while health issues are considered by the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs.

"The Government did say that they would do this by Autumn this year but much quicker action needs to be taken as there were 40 new 'legal' highs discovered in 2010."

Let me get this right... So Carl, you think drugs need to be legalised so we can stop young people misusing substances?? Makes perfect sense (*snigger)

Actually in fact the tax's could be used to help say for more help For those who need it as in Holland.the use of cannabis won't stop so tax it and reinvest in ways to stop the young turning to drugs in the fists place. But closed minds will never see

And do you think legalising and taxing drugs will pay for the long-term health services that would be crippled by such a move? We would have psychiatric units the size of jails and more social workers than people!

"AH see the world governments want to make all these 'legal-highs' banned so they can keep selling the schedule I narcotics that they bring into their countries themselves!!"

name is ok. systematic name of the freebase is 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-1,5-methano-3-benzazepine or 10-Azatricyclo[6.3.1.0²·⁷]dodeca-2,4,6-triene

it's structurally related to the smoking cessation drug varenicline

3,5-Bicyclic aryl piperidines are a new class of high-affinity alpha4beta2
nicotinic receptor agents. We have sought nicotinic receptor partial agonists of
the alpha4beta2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor for smoking cessation, and a
number of compounds fulfill potency, selectivity, and efficacy requirements in
vitro. In vivo, selected agents demonstrate potent partial agonist efficacy on
the mesolimbic dopamine system, a key measure of therapeutic potential for
smoking cessation.

look in trip reports at the structure of this chem. It looks very bad and i dont even know too much about chemistry. People freak the fuck out on this stuff. I can't say im suprised these drugs are breaking towards stop smoking drugs, mdpv killed any urge to have smokes for me
