Drug dealing which plagues south Cambridge will “never go away”, a police chief has warned – because traffickers who get locked up are just replaced with another batch from London. Sgt Jim Stevenson, the area’s top officer, said 17 people were currently on bail after being arrested by his team in the last three months but that this would not stamp out the trade. In the last quarter, officers executed eight drugs warrants in the south and east of the city, resulting in a number of arrests – including seven people who were detained on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs – and the seizure of class A and B drugs.

On top of this, 35 people have been stopped under stop and search legislation, resulting in two arrests for possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply, and cannabis seizures from five people. Sgt Stevenson told the south area committee most of the dealers were being sent from London and that, while his officers were getting “very proficient” at spotting traffickers, this would not end the matter. He said: “When we deal with them, we will then deal with the people sent to replace them. To some extent the problem is never going to go away.”

EXECUTE the drug dealers. Problem would then very quickly move to another country, simples.

Of course this is mostly true, even with legalization and regulation there will still be a "war" on addictions if they choose to use that term, although it really isn't fitting.
Drugs will always be around and thus so will the need to deal with the negative effects of these drugs.
However that doesn't mean that imprisoning people and allowing the black market to run the drug trade is a better solution to treatment and regulation.

-------

So 30 people who had nothing to do with drugs were stopped and had their rights violated? I bet a whole bunch of those stopped were little old white ladies, right? No profiling or anything. I hate stop and search because it is always used as a racist tool, in NYC or UK or anywhere. The cops use against people they don't like.
It should be illegal for the police to touch you until you are arrested.

I used to score in Cambridge from the London drug dealers way back from 1999-2005.
They were the slickest operators with the best gear and on 24/7. One lot would get busted and would soon be replaced and the police still can't stop them as they are still dealing in Cambridge all these years later.
