THE TRAGEDY OF LEGAL HIGHS: WHY HAVE SO MANY FALLEN VICTIM TO SUBSTANCES THAT CAN'T BE BAN

ACCOMPANIED by a picture of a mushroom-shape atomic bomb explosion, a drug called Annihilation is being advertised on the internet as a "headblowing herbal incense" that has "EXPLOSIVE strength" and has arrived "with a BOOM!"
Pricing the product at £25 for 3g, another site uses similar language and promises that the use of Annihilation will "blow you away".
Further down in a much smaller typeface are written the words "not for human consumption". The problem is that human consumption is exactly why many people are buying it.
Police have just issued a caution about Annihilation - the latest legal high - warning that in the past three months nine people have been admitted to hospital after taking it, and that's just in the Glasgow area.
"Just because it's legal doesn't mean it's safe," says Detective Inspector Jim Bradley.
Dr McKeagney believes that shops that are selling products like Annihilation "fully in the knowledge that these products are being used for human consumption" should face tough financial penalties.
He also believes the answer is "analogue legislation".
"That is where you ban entire categories of substances," says Dr McKeagney. "To many people that may seem harsh but these drugs now pose such a threat that if we continue to tackle the drugs on a substance by substance basis we will not be able to tackle them."
Other experts have different views. Professor David Nutt, the former government drugs adviser, says: "My view is very straightforward - you need education. "People need to have a comprehension of what they are doing. That's the problem. People don't know about the harm or the risks.
"Learning about the risks of all drugs should be a central part of the curriculum and that it has been taken out of the curriculum is reprehensible."
