NEARLY half of convicted drug dealers are avoiding jail because of soft justice, The Sun can reveal.
Just 56 per cent of offenders guilty of possession with intent to supply are caged.
The other 44 per cent get either suspended sentences, community sentences or discharges. Last night Tory MP Philip Davies blasted the lenient approach.
He said: "The majority of right-thinking people will be disgusted by this news. Drug dealers deal in misery and death and their actions are completely abhorrent. These figures are simply not acceptable. Every drug dealer should be locked up."
The Ministry of Justice statistics for 2009 were obtained by The Sun through a Freedom of Information request.
Of 6,394 people sentenced for drug dealing in England and Wales, a whopping 2,693 were not jailed. Incredibly, the figure includes one in four found guilty of peddling Class A drugs such as heroin or cocaine.
And 80 per cent of Class B cannabis dealers were not caged.
The Sun has launched a Say No To Soft Justice campaign after a string of lenient sentences. One judge about to jail a shoplifter changed his mind because the thief had to look after his CAT.

Drug dealers. Shot
Drug mules. Shot
Drug takers. Three chances. Then shot.
Simple. Problem solved.
