Vandalism at a Southampton cemetery could be evidence of a form of substance abuse new to the UK, according to a drugs charity. It is thought teenagers misusing a legitimate feminine anti-inflammatory product damaged the Old Cemetery. DrugScope said the product is available over the counter but its misuse can produce hallucinogenic effects. Police said they were looking into allegations of possible drug or legal high use by those responsible.

Harry Shapiro of DrugScope said it was the first time the charity had heard of the gynaecological anti-inflammatory product being misused in the UK. But he said there were reports of it being abused in Eastern Europe and Brazil. Mr Shapiro said: "It produces visual hallucinations, people get confused, over-excited and agitated which would explain the vandalism. People could get themselves hurt and indulge in fairly mindless behaviour."

Did you read the article?

There can't be many 'teenagers' out there who even know this drug exists, let alone know it can be used 'recreationally'...I say that hesitantly because it sounds about as recreational as gone-off milk.

For those of you that live in the South of the UK, BBC news at 10 are going to run this story in the regional news segment.

Benzydamine has no recorded history of recreational use in Britain...However there is evidence of it being used recreationally in Poland. The incident in question involved benzydamine that had been purchased from a Polish supermarket. No prizes for guessing how benzydamine abuse made it to Britain. It would appear that getting high off an OTC female hygiene supplement is one of the more unusual pastimes Polish youth seem enjoy.

Benzydamine from Tantum Rosa now available in UK as a legal high

Southampton - Southampton has become the first place in the UK where officials acknowledge that an Eastern European feminine hygiene product is being abused by people in order to experience a ‘legal high’ from its benzydamine hydrochloride ingredient.

On January 4, 2012, BBC Radio Solent’s newsman Tristan Pascoe reported an exclusive news item about how investigations relating to vandalism in Southampton’s “Old Cemetery” last autumn indicate that the desecrations are probably linked to the first reported case of abuse within the UK of benzydamine hydrochloride by the ingestion of what the BBC referred to as a “feminine hygiene product”.

Pascoe went on to explain how a group of youths had been seen congregating in Southampton’s
old cemetery around the time of the vandalism. Shortly after, a cemetery conservation group found empty wrappings from packets of that particular feminine hygiene product in the same area.

The feminine hygiene product coyly referred to above goes by the name of Tantum Rosa. This product is mainly available in Eastern Europe and is sold in the form of a sachet of powder which is re-hydrated and then used as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory douche based preparation which acts as a cleanser to the vaginal area and is particularly effective after childbirth and gynaecological surgery. During his investigations, Pascoe found the product was available over the counter at a small number of Polish produce shops in Southampton

However, when re-hydrated and ingested orally rather than applied topically, the benzydamine hydrochloride within Tantum Rosa creates a four-phase chemical “high” according to Internet drug forum Bluelight. The first phase is described as relaxation with a little confusion. The second phase includes visual disturbances. Phase three involves full-on hallucinations, both auditory and visual. The final phase, it seems, comprises the classic drug-induced come-down with symptoms of depression and tiredness yet, contrarily, an inability to actually sleep.

Benzydamine has been known to be a drug of abuse for years. This media sensationalism is similar to that of DXM before the internet (particularly the old version of Erowid) spread it around as common knowledge. When people abused Drixoral 30mg DXM capsules not much was made of it. Not until DXM-only products were purely cough syrup did it become "teenagers drinking bottles of cough syrup for legal high".

Benzydamine pills are abused in many parts of the world- Eastern Europe, South America, etc.

It just makes a better story that it's a "feminine hygiene product". Just more of a farce than drinking cough syrup as a media scare tactic. Remember "Cheese" heroin? Strawberry drink powder mixed with Cocaine "specifically for children"? LSD applied to vending machine temporary tattoos "for children"? Unscrupulous hobby shop owners selling Toulene glue?

How H. B. Fuller convinced ethical investors, the media, and the public that Third World glue-sniffers are not its problem.

It's hard to resist H. B. Fuller's corporate charm. Their environmentally sensitive research lab sits on the shores of Willow Lake near St. Paul and supports a 115-acre nature preserve. Employees work for good wages and top-of-the-line benefits; in their spare time, they're expected to volunteer for charitable organizations, which also receive 5 percent of Fuller's pre- tax profits. The balance sheet sings' so do socially responsible investors, who hand Fuller award after award, along with their trust-fund dollars.

It's hard, too, to resist the pictures from Guatemala: street children crowded around dingy corners, buying plastic bags of glue for a dime apiece. When they sink their heads into the bags and breathe, hunger, loneliness, and fear give way to a sense of comfort and power. Kids who've done this for a while develop chronic coughs, lose use of some of their limbs, vital organs, and brain cells. Eventually they crawl the streets instead of walking, still begging or stealing for more glue. Many die of kidney or heart failure, hunger, or police beatings.

Odds are that the glue the kids are sniffing is made by Fuller. The company says it feels bad about this, but so far it's refused to follow the lead of other manufacturers and add a foul- smelling substance that may prevent abuse. Instead, Fuller has taken a series of highly publicized steps--adding labels, supporting social programs, even pulling out of some markets after it started catching national media attention. Today, after collecting a slew of awards and glowing editorials for the way it handled the problem, the company continues to sell its glue in the countries where kids sniff it. And nobody, except a few activists and social workers, seems to be too bothered by that.

Resistol--advertised with a cute cartoon elephant and the slogan "You stick it and it never comes unstuck"--is popular among shoemakers, who buy it by the pail and use it in small manufacturing operations, often for export to the U.S. It's also popular among street kids, so much so that glue addicts are known in many countries as resistoleros.

The active ingredient in many inhalants, including Resistol, is toluene, a substance made from petroleum that has a sweet, slightly nauseating smell. In the U.S., it's widely used in manufacturing and is considered one of the country's top air pollutants by the EPA. Toluene has a peculiar effect on humans; it goes straight to the frontal lobes, the "switchboard" of the brain, and to the areas that control emotions. There, it can turn off the brain's connection to reality, neutralizing stress, pain, fear, and memory. In a word, it's the perfect drug for street kids.

am pretty sure that the vandalism was going to happen whether or not the drug was consumed, youths in the uk, and in that area of southampton are quite a menace without drugs.

I agree it is just another story to sensationalise something that isn't sensational. Just more propaganda :\
