We’re losing the war on drugs, so let’s give up. That seemed to be the conclusion of this week’s high profile debate on illegal narcotics hosted by Intelligence Squared in London.
The consensus among liberalisers was that if we legalise drugs then all the associated crime will just go away. Control of narcotics will pass from pushers to doctors and pharmacists. The general population will become acculturated to drugs. Addicts will be treated as sufferers rather than criminals. Abuse will decline. And at the back of the average liberal’s mind is the hope that we’ll all gather in a big circle and start a chorus of “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing.” Coke: it's the real thing.
But does legalisation end crime? The experience of residents in the poorer bits of Los Angeles suggests not.

I knew a hippie/stoner weed horticulturalist at college. It seemed like everyone around him had a devastating nervous breakdown, or was mentally ill, or suffered from depression, or their life went economically downhill, or were found face down in a river, and that little cretin was the common denominator in the centre of all that misery, swearing blind in his dosshouse, joint in mouth, x box controller in hand, that cannabis is good for you. I saw him last year. At age forty he has a bedsit to show for his 'efforts', no wife, no kids, couldn't hold down a job, even though he was very intelligent. Just another life ruined by drugs.

There is no war on drugs, but the first salvo, the very first statement of intent in the coming war on drugs, should be to tell the entertainment industry "no, they will not glamourise illegal drug use in our society any more."

The usual conservative nonsense, not worth reading, much less responding.

Didn't realise drugs were legalized in LA...oh wait.

Wow! What a one-sided, biased, blind and ridiculous article that was. That is a prime peice propaganda if I have ever seen one. Wish I had never read that article.

What an idiot... obviously decriminalization in small areas will cause crime to go up there, but this is a perfect case for blanket regulation and legalization. Also, no one is claiming that medical marijuana, which is available to a limited subset of users, should have eliminated the illicit marijuana market.

Drug war a necessary evil= money to be made by politicians, judges, police, lawyers, jails, governments...........keeps a lot of people in business making money.

at least they apologized. i'll remember that fondly if i'm ever sitting in prison for a therapeutic plant.

social conservatives' true colors shine...

But its okay to glamorize alcohol & cigarettes, the biggest killers of all...........these people need to be electrocuted for their stupidity!

I think it's kind of silly to expect decriminalization to decrease crime. As long as drugs are in the hands of the black market, the only crime decriminalization would reduce would be drug possession. It has no effect on prices or the crime inherit to any market that doesn't have legal avenues to resolve disputes.
