Once the poppy heads are taken and dried the seed pods inside are processed and turned into morphine and codeine.
The process requires a degree of expertise which is why growers are confident the flowers will not be stolen by drug dealers looking to turn them into heroin.

Confident they wont be stolen by drug dealers looking to turn them into heroin... what about drug users stealing them to make a nice pot of tea?

^Maybe they didn't think that deeply into it?

Although, and this may just be the junkie inside me talking, but the first thing I thought of when I saw this post was damn, I want to make some poppy tea. ;)

I'd steal some if I lived nearby, what they think opium is hard to get from them and has no value?

It's crazy that they're growing it in the UK though, they should pay Afghan farmers to grow it for them.

Exactly, I'm sure they could easily outbid the the taliban, aiding the war on drugs and the war on terror simultaneously.

Shame both of the are exercises in futility.

Maybe not heroin, but I'd love to come across a field like this and harvest myself a big pile of opium :)

seriously, i wonder how well guarded these fields are, if at all? If not at all I'd love to spend a day scoring and scraping pods to get some smokable raw.. if they're watched I'm sure you could still get in and out with a big ol black garbage bag full of pods lol that would be amazing

Not guarded at all from what I can tell. It'd require a fair amount of effort on your part but you could probably harvest enough to last you a while if you spend a day at it at the right time.

Or you could just do as you say and fill a bin bag with them

I had no idea they could grow in the UK climate. I always imagined them growing in hotter countries.

They're pretty hardy plants, but they don't cope well at all with being transferred. You could just sow seeds at the right time and pretty much leave them until harvesting. Rain dependent of course.
