UK: New Powers to Ban 'Legal High'' Drugs

Was just about to post something about this.

Another link here says that the temporary ban will be 12 months.

Legal Highs to be Banned Immediately

Currently the Home Office’s advisers on the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs have to consider the danger of a drug before it can be banned.

However, this process is seen as too unwieldy. Instead, under the changes, ministers will be able to ban legal high drugs temporarily, while the advisory council meets to discuss a permanent ban.

Tougher penalties will also be brought in, with suppliers facing 14 years in prison and an unlimited fine if they are caught with a legal high substance which has been banned temporarily.

However there will no penalties for anyone caught in possession to “prevent the unnecessary criminalisation of the young”, the Home Office said.

FFS:X

Then again, couldn't vendors sell them as "bath salts" or "plant feed" or something and get around that ban as easy as that? I mean.. whats to say a chemical is a legal high untill someone consumes it?

I would assume they mean banning the actual chemicals. Otherwise this would be pointless.

This is just part of the new coalition governments “crack down“ on drugs .

A Home Office spokesman ' has outlined the new tougher approach thus –

“The government does not believe that decriminalisation is the right approach. Our priorities are clear; we want to reduce drug use, crack down on drug related crime and disorder and help addicts come off drugs for good.'”

They are also considering withdrawing welfare benefits for addicts that refuse work or treatment programmes.

In opposition the Conservatives expressed a libertarian distaste for “big government” intervening in citizens lives - but that’s all forgotten now that they are in power. If anything they are more authoritarian on social issues than the left. Their talk of lower taxes came to nothing as well.

this is going to start pushing the RC scene even more underground. chemists will make new chemicals and just not tell anyone about them and only share them with the people they trust, who will not tell anyone esle about them. this will destroy the social setting of the RC scene in a terrible way :( :(

Agreed
This will make the scene go underground and even more dangerous with people not sharing reports ETC
I fear more deaths getting caused from this ban

Reading the report, legislation in place by the end of next year, So enjoy the scene while it lasts at least its not iminent

This isn't bad news for the RC scene imo. Most vendors are based in mainland Europe and there doesn't appear to be much focus on end-user legality here. Also, if they're going to be looking at social impact to assess future legal status, the less idiots buying it the better.

I do predict the better sites though will become strictly members only with quite a rigorous validation process to ensure new stuff isn't sold to officials.

have to agree with most replys in here it will simply make the RC scene go underground the chemicals will still get into the uk and then they will be cut with possibly anything and then sold on at twice the price
just my view on things

ps. does anyone know if there are any import charges to pay to the goverment when importing powder from china to the uk?

It was this way till all the UKer's became irresponsible drug users ( a bit of an exaggeration of course). The only way the RC scene will work is if it isn't well known to the public. Once the public gets a hold of it, it becomes a serious issue for the government, as we all know too well. The government turns it into a great big issue and continues its love of being irrational even in the face of rationality (cough david nutt cough).

I'm hoping this will push the scene semi-underground again and help promote a less volatile way of introducing and selling of these unresearched chemicals and most importantly promote safer consumption of these chemicals. Just look how mephedrone/cathinones and 6-apb were treated.
