UK - More young adults indulging in "hippy crack" but overall drug use drops

MORE than 6 per cent of young adults used a legal high known as "hippy crack" in the last year, according to the first figures to be published on its use in England and Wales.

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is inhaled to make people feel euphoric and relaxed - but drug experts warn it can cause death on first time use through suffocation.

For the 2012/13 Crime Survey for England and Wales, questions were added for the first time on the use of the drug, which is sometimes sold to recreational users in balloons, as well as herbal high salvia, also known as Mexican magic mint.

Some 6.1 per cent of adults aged 16 to 24 had taken nitrous oxide, while 1.1 per cent had taken salvia in the last year.

But overall drug use in England and Wales is at the lowest level since records began, according to a Home Office report, with around 8.2 per cent of 16 to 59-year-olds using an illicit drug in the last year, compared with 11.1 per cent in 1996.

And the proportion of adults who took a class A drug has dropped from 3 per cent in 2011/12 to 2.6 per cent.

Crime Prevention Minister Jeremy Browne said: "Today's report shows drug usage in England and Wales is at its lowest level since records began."

A survey on attitudes also revealed that almost four out of five - or 79 per cent - of respondents thought taking cannabis was unsafe.

Two-thirds thought it was never acceptable to take cannabis and the majority said it was unsafe to take heroin, cocaine or ecstasy.

This seems to contradict many other sources of drug use from all around the world. I wonder how they chose the participants. Were they randomly chosen, or selected from only the most conservative areas of the country/countries?

Honestly, I call shenanigans. Literally nobody I have ever met considers cannabis unsafe, and even I'm surprised at how many people use cocaine.

The general publics comments on drugs being safe is completely null. Unless they have experience in that area themselves or know people closely or studied the effects carefully,

Most of what people learn is just the propaganda and bullshit that the police teach at school, instead of teaching the real dangers.
Cannabis wouldnt even be dangerous or harmful if in UK they just legalised and sold high CBD strains it would end lots of hospital admissions for psychosis and schizophrenic like symptoms, as CBD combats the psychoactive effects of THC.

I only tried a couple of these synthetic cabbanoids but would guess potential for psychosis huge.i am No scientist but as i understand there not a weed copy but target specific receptor not a wide range as i think cannabis does. This is just my understanding. ps i am pro cannabis when treated with respect. Tiny bit of bud vaped incredible pain relief but not when smoked..
