Millions of workers should be tested for drugs: Met chief declares war on substance abuse

• Professionals should face drug testing, says Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe
• Met Police Commissioner said action was needed to discourage demand
• He said testing could take place in 'all occupations', but in particular teachers, intensive care nurses and transport staff

Millions of professionals should face mandatory drug testing at work, Britain’s most senior police officer has suggested.
Anyone who failed a test and refused help to get clean should lose their job, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said.
The Metropolitan Police Commissioner said as well as ‘robust’ policing of dealers, action was needed to discourage the demand for illegal substances. He said testing could take place in ‘all occupations’ but cited in particular teachers, intensive care nurses and transport staff.

In a speech to the all-party parliamentary group on cannabis and children, Sir Bernard said drug testing and the fear of losing their job would act as a deterrent for drug users. He said: ‘It seems to me we have got to plant in people’s minds something to affect the demand as well as supply. You can think of many occupations where if you were working with a colleague you would want to be sure in fact that they were drug free.’
Employers who discovered a staff member abusing drugs would not have to turn ‘informant’ and tell the police, he added.
Anyone caught with drugs in their system should be offered help to stop, he said – but anyone who refused that help should suffer ‘consequences, which would probably be about their employment’.

He may as well have announced his admiration of Hitler, Jimmy Saville and Peter Sutcliff. He is clearly not sound of mind to be in the job he is in. Maybe he isn't taking his medication.

for some jobs i can see the reasons, oil/nuclear industry with high risk of danger should a mistake be made then you wouldnt want someone out there high or with a mokey on their back, transport are operating very heavy machinery often in public so you can see how this would be frowned upon, nurses care for patients and take vital measurements so is understandable, teachers im guessing is due to their "influence" on children and we cannot have them being open minded.

you could argue that personall use of drugs outside working hours wont effect performance but that would make detection next to impossible and many roles are essentially unsupervised so would go unoticed (untill an accident) if the worker was unsupervised

I think these tests are quite expensive to carry out in practice and may open up further legal issues for the employers concerned if they confront staff over failed tests.

Also, interestingly, whilst the British armed forces make a big song and dance about drug testing soldiers they actually do very little of this in practice, again due to cost. So I doubt testing teachers and nurses is suddenly going to be of great appeal.

Of course he will be including police officers, politicians and judges in his list !

People will just switch to drugs that get out of your system quicker and one that aren't tested for; allot of which are more harmful.

I've got some mates in the forces. When one of them got back from their few weeks of leave the corporal said "There's going to be a drug test, so if any of you have done anything in the past few weeks just let me know and we'll get you squared away for a dentist appointment".
