The legal high methoxetamine, or mexxy, is to become the first drug to be banned temporarily under new government powers, the Home Office has said. The drug, used as an alternative to ketamine, will be made illegal for up to 12 months. The government's advisers will then decide whether it should be permanently controlled.

Early indications suggest it may have been used by four people in the time leading to them dying. There have been no confirmed deaths relating to the drug and tests are continuing.

The substance was referred to the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) earlier this month.

Its tests found evidence that use of methoxetamine can lead to "significant additional toxicity", including agitation, a faster heart rate and higher blood pressure, as well as unsteadiness on the feet.

These symptoms are rarely seen with ketamine or other recreational drugs, the advisers said.

'Ruins lives'

Anyone caught making, supplying or importing the drug will face up to 14 years in prison and an unlimited fine under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, the Home Office said. Police and border officials will also be allowed to search or detain anyone they suspect of having the drug and seize, keep or dispose of a substance they suspect is methoxetamine. Crime Prevention Minister Lord Henley said: "Making this drug illegal sends a clear message to users and those making and supplying it that we are stepping up our fight against substances which are dangerous and ruin the lives of victims and their families.

"It is important for users of these harmful substances to understand that just because they are described as legal highs, it does not mean they are safe or should be seen as a 'safer' alternative to illegal substances."

ACMD chairman Professor Les Iversen said: "The evidence shows that the use of methoxetamine can cause harm to users.
"Many of the health effects... are similar to those of ketamine, which is already controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

"Users have also reported experiencing other serious effects including agitation, cardiovascular conditions and hypertension."

what? bullshit

and then this contradiction:

"Many of the health effects... are similar to those of ketamine, which is already controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

wtf

..."including agitation" - what???
"a faster heart rate" - Many things cause this like sugar and caffeine,
"and higher blood pressure" - So does caffeine and salt,
"as well as unsteadiness on the feet" - That's all part of the fun! And so does alcohol.

"Making this drug illegal sends a clear message to users and those making and supplying it that we are stepping up our fight against substances which are dangerous and ruin the lives of victims and their families."
What's that fizzing sound? Oh, it's my blood boiling.

I'm curious about his alleged, "agitation, cardiovascular conditions and hypertension". This is not something I've heard anyone report. I know many trip reports keep a log of heart rate and blood pressure. It just doesn't seem to me to be that kind of drug. Stimulants maybe, but MXE?

I wonder if these alleged symptoms are really severe enough, if they exist, to warrant concern.

just a total load of wanky doublespeak to suit politicians agendas and pacify the cries of the ignorant

where's david nutt when you need him

MXE doesn't really mess with your heart rate at all. I'm pretty sensitive to drugs that do, and mine sits at a steady 70 - 80bpm on MXE.

Maybe he can do some shadow research to call BS on the ACMD. Not sure if he's up for doing that or if he needs funding and where it would come from, or if it is something he can do as an ISCD project. (http://www.drugscience.org.uk/)

Anyway, it would be good to hear his take on all this.

not saying it's significant, but the symptoms are documented in the medical literature:

Government officials are going to give more credence to published case studies than to internet trip reports, obviously.

hypertension (168/77), tachycardia (134 bpm) is a bit scary but the second case, tachycardia (105 bpm) and hypertension (140/95) is nothing to write home about if it is just for a few hours.

Sounds like both cases had a lot of the stuff.

Also, what was their blood pressure when they weren't on MXE? Some people do have high blood pressure anyway.

^the first guy IVd and the second IMd; that's probably the reason for the divergence?

honestly the only way you can accurately establish a side-effect profile for a drug is by conducting a clinical trial with multiple subjects and adequate controls

Does anyone know what exact date it will be banned? I ordered 500mg on 26th March and it hasn't turned up, and I've never in the last two years had a delay. Along with some ethylphenidate. I hope it hasn't been seized cos that's £21 down the drain. :(

I noticed today too that a well known vendor has now removed MXE from their website, but another still has it up.

I've just searched "Methoxetamine ban" on google and it looks like it's banned today. So, will PC plod be knocking on my door? As I'm still expecting it in the post. :(

Low doses of MXE 10-15mg helped me to get through baddest part of suboxone wds after nearly 2yrs addiction.. I think it will help with opiate wds as well, there is positive side to it! Need that government made more research on this substance, maybe it can help with Hardest part of opiate wds, because of it anesthesia (Rubber Body with no pain) and insignificant activity on u-opioid receptors! All ppl who died from drugs - that happened because they cant control theyr dose, they think if they do more they get to another level, but they not right, another level will be overdose!!! I been using drugs for years, lost lot of good friends and they all died coz they cant control the safe dose!

That isn't surprising as MXE's cousin, Ketamine, has been used for both alcohol and opiate addiction.

Of course its going to be permanently controlled. Not just in the UK, either. MXE has been heading this way for a while. Websites like EK and LHG along with people posting about their trips carelessly and certain asian vendors are directly to blame for this. This is going to be the next 4MMC.

I was never a fan, but I always encouraged people to calm down, stop posting youtube videos, etc etc. People are fucking stupid and its sad, cuz you ruin it for everyone.

PS: Ketamine is known to have amazing anti-depressant qualities, and methoxetamine may have as well. It looks like the world will never know. How much research do you see on the medicinal uses of mephedrone?

In a letter I recently received from Rand Paul, he emphasizes one of the main reasons he blocked the federal rc bans is because then research would be impossible, along with
The proposed legislation would also apply overly harsh criminal penalties of up to 20 years in prison for distribution of synthetic drugs, or possession with the intent to distribute. Mandatory minimum sentences like these prevent judges from weighing the circumstances of a given case and imposing an appropriate sentence. A recent report by the U.S. Sentencing Commission found that federal mandatory minimum sentences are often "excessively severe," and are not "narrowly tailored to apply only to those offenders who warrant such punishment," particularly for those convicted of drug-trafficking offenses

Not to say MXE is safe but I have a friend that is aware of various people trying to kill themselves with MXE by attempting to OD.

They have eaten a gram of it and just woken up. This isn't to say that its safe, only to say that a hefty dose-way more than it takes to reach a hole was not toxic in some instances. I just think they should teach people how to use MXE and other stuff responsibly so they don't die. Then again...natural selection. I mean, shit, if those people hadn't died by taken MXE and drinking alcohol and then tried to go swimming, who knows what sort of irresponsible behavior they could have done-even sober-that would've killed them.
