Liberal Democrats are expected to call for an independent inquiry into the decriminalisation of possession of all drugs. A motion to be put at the party's annual conference next month is likely to be passed, officials said. It would be the first government-sponsored inquiry into decriminalisation, but is unlikely to have the support of David Cameron who has hardened his approach to drugs after being a past advocate of more liberal legislation as a member of the home affairs select committee. Ministerial sources point out that the government published a review of drugs strategy in 2010 and does not yet see any need for a rethink. Senior Liberal Democrats believe Cameron and the home secretary, Theresa May, could be persuaded to hold an open-minded inquiry into a controversy which divides public, political and medical opinion.

And from the Daily Mail...

Liberal Democrats will vote to legalise cannabis and decriminalise all other personal drug use under plans put forward for approval at their party conference.
MPs and drugs campaigners yesterday denounced the idea as likely to drag young people into a life of drug abuse.
Conservative MP Charles Walker added: ‘My Tory colleagues will see sense and make sure this really stupid idea never happens. It is obvious that drugs do a great deal of harm. ‘Drugs should be illegal because it sends the right message: that drugs are damaging.’

Drug use is not currently criminalised…it's the possession and sale etc. of controlled drugs that are illegal… :)

when the british government can make more money from the legal rather then the illicit. we may see some change.

The UK did this kinda thing last year, the "inquiry" or whatev u wanna call it showed that cannabis laws should be loosened etc. And what happened? they raise the punishments for posession. So basically the goverment wont give a shit what this inquiry will say.

coffeeshops in the UK will stop me associating the UK with hyprocrasy, bigotry, depression and insanity. and possibly i might want to move there again. there is also the fact that the british people really fucking deserve coffeeshops, especially since they could do with more tourism income. then also the dutch can stop winging that their country is overrun.

The more places in the world that support legalization, the better off we are in the U.S. as it will become increasingly difficult for the gov to deny that marijuana is harmless and many, many people want it to be legal and prohibition only creates problems.
