If you go down to the park next weekend you’re in for a big surprise. Because protesters are due to set up camp in Birmingham’s Cannon Hill Park to campaign for cannabis to be legalised. Organisers of the demonstration say they are prepared to flout current laws – and smoke the banned drug in front of police. They claim at least 200 supporters will attend the event which has much support in across the West Midlands where one house in every three streets grows cannabis .

Birmingham Cannabis Club says so far 134 people have confirmed that they will be joining them in Birmingham’s most popular park, which is next door to West Midlands Police training headquarters Tally Ho! And many more have pledged support on the club’s Facebook page for the protest on Saturday August 31 from 1pm.

Organiser Matt Towers said: “The whole point of doing this is to raise awareness that cannabis does have significant therapeutic values for medical conditions, but also we believe strongly that people shouldn’t be made into criminals for something that is a personal choice. “We’re not asking to be allowed to go walking down the street smoking a big joint, we’re just asking to be left alone in the privacy of our own homes.

I attended an event like this years ago in Pompey. It was the most civilzed protest I'd ever attended, it was just people sitting around smoking dope peacefully, not hurting anybody, not even shouting slogans....so the pigs showed up Normandy Invasion-style. Mass arrests. I counted 20 meat wagons, sniffer dogs, CID, the full works. An operation costing Christ only knows how much to the taxpayer. It made me realise: the police like these laws. If you've got a war on drugs, you get access to a war chest.

The problem is in numbers. I went to many protests when there are 1000's or 10's of thousands of pot heads the police fear starting a riot. Thats good, I like when police fear us. They should. Don't allow the police to arrest your brother. The police work for you, they are your bitches, its not the other way around, and they need reminding.
The best results I ever saw were just before social media got big we postered in every alley, park and possible place stoners might go. Next to high schools, because those kids come out in droves, near the art school, in head shops.

There is a strength in numbers. Can you imagine the resources it would take to investigate and arrest every single recreational drug user!? Society would come to a frigging standstill. Ive been reading about some of the inner city American cities that are pretty much open air drug bazaars; all the police can do is make token arrests and act tough apparently. The tokenism is what irritates me. What pisses me off more is seeing TV reports of swat looking pigs kicking people's doors in, arresting people for paltry little hauls of a few grams of dope, then telling the camera with perfect sincerity "This few grams of a dangerous drug will not make it to the street; the operation was a resounding success. We're winning the war against drugs".
